One of the most miserable and regrettable experiences of my life
Nov 2015 • Couples
Plan: couple's massage for our 10th wedding anniversary. It was a first for my husband. Cost: triple of what we would pay in North America, but we thought the name of the establishment and the occasion deserved the call. We were asked to pay before service: i thought it was tacky, but thought the rules were just different. I was freezing during the massage, but was told there was nothing they could do, as temperature was controlled by the hotel. My masseuse told me she was a novice, and so, she was tentative and weak. While in the shower trying to warm myself up, my husband informed me that i should hurry up and join him for the cup of tea we were offered as they needed the room back for the next customer. The hour or hour and a half we were given was up. I was also not allowed to stay in the changing room long enough to dry my hair, so i was given a hair dryer to use outside the Spa, in the hotel's women's washroom down the hall. To exchange our gifts, i tried to make it a little more special by ordering 2 glasses of bubblies, but i still felt pathetic, when directed to sit by chairs set out nearby the Spa in one of the hotel corridors. Upon departure, i thought i would speak to the manager and express how disappointed i was with Banyon Tree - it SURELY did not live up to its reputation. I didn't want to ruin our special day, so i was conscious of raising this matter up in the gentlest of ways. I couldn't believe when she asked me if i wanted to try again. Why would one wish to repeat such lamentable experience? My beloved husband has since passed away. I can only regret now that i have this terrible memory and that he didn't get to live the pampering spas are known to provide. Frankly, the standard here is lower than that of a walk-in foot massage parlour or a nail salon. Save your money, save your time, save plenty of aggravation and stay away from this place. This place probably survived only on one-time visitors - tourists like me - who fell for their reputation.

Relaxing and welcoming
Jun 2016 • Solo
I had the Balinese massage which was similar but not as long as the massage I had at Spa Village in Hangzhou. Located in the Westin Hotel, if you were a guest I am sure it would be an excellent diversion. The therapist spoke sufficient english and was very attentive and made sure I was okay with the pressure, etc. Private dressing rooms, calm and quiet environment. Typical tea and fruit at end. Reception was friendly and efficient. The only thing that held back an excellent rating is that during the treatment, the therapist occasionally broke off to prepare or put away materials. So it was a little distracting, the noise and the break. But this is really only a small thing. A great price also, compared to similar treatments in the US.

2 hours of bliss
Jul 2014 • Business
An excellent way to relax and wind down after the hot hustle and bustle of Shanghai.. It was so calming and I had the best nights sleep afterwards. For me it was worth the price as it was so indulgent. The massage and scrub left me feeling so refreshed and I'd go back again and again if I had the money!

I love Banyan Tree's Spa Packages! My fave is the package covering a Balinese massage inclusive a scrub beforehand. It's a more than 3-hour total bliss treatment!

Of course there is other massage places in Shanghai, but the Banyan Tree Spa calms you down the minute you cross the threshold.

I'd always go back, though - at some stage - they charge you an arm and a leg, but it's worth it.

Excellent Service, Great Treatment
Nov 2011 • Business
Was there on 2-days. The first treatment by a local was not fantastic, but the entire experience was calming and relaxing. The second treatment was a great combination of excellent Thai therapist and Guilin Hot Stone Treatment. Lethal combination. I didn't want to leave the spa facility.

Very nice but expensive to local standards.
It was very nice but very expensive. A couple days later I discovered a Spa that was located in the French Concession District that wasn't as nice, but experience was amazing. And the therapist was skilled and hard working.
