The completely rebuilt Bund, the riverfront in downtown Shanghai on the Puxi side of the Huangpu, is now prepared to host the spectacle of a colossal “people scene.”

What once was the simple slanted riverbank with wooden shipping boats pulled ashore in the 1800s, then developed with a seawall and platforms, now in 2010 emerges as the grand esplanade of China, perhaps of Asia.

This edition of the Bund is on a monumental scale. The elevated walkway at its narrowest is about 13 meters wide, and at its widest several times that. (A lower plaza section is sometimes much wider creating far greater capacity.) A granite quarry must have been emptied of its entire gray product for the constant use over much of the visible surfaces, both as a walking surface and sidewalls. The rough hewn nature of the rock makes it highly slip resistant.

Along the way, the designers incorporated wide planks of dark-brown-stained wood, especially for seating surfaces, so you can avoid cold stone. These contrasting materials work well and provide relief from what borders on being some type of gigantic memorial edifice. Is it too massive, too oppressive in scope and size? Perhaps at times it is, but you hardly will notice when it serves its function, hosting tens of thousands of people most days and hundreds of thousands during weekends and holidays.

The highpoints of the Bund are at each end. On the north, next to the 102-year-old Waibaidu Bridge across the Suzhou Creek, is Huangpu Park, known over the years as Shanghai’s lovers’ park. On a fairly uncrowded day it is a beautiful place to stop and pause, even contemplate. The ponds, the zagged walks, the many arbors and heavy forestation remove one from downtown Shanghai and create a world of its own. On busy days, however, this is likely to be totally overwhelmed and lose much of the magic and human scale.

On the south end of the Bund is the Shiliupu Pier, now designed to handle the many river cruise boats while providing an elevated viewing platform for the Huangpu. It contrasts with the northern forested park by being more of a granite park with plantings.

Clearly, there is no other place quite like the Bund in Shanghai. It is the place to see and be seen in a city of 19 million people, having a sort of life of its own as a gathering spot for people from all over. Residents are there for their dancing, tai chi and walks in addition to the people-watching. Visitors stroll the two-kilometer-long walk while dozens of groups are accompanied by guides and bullhorns. Red jacketed young people scurry around to take your picture to be printed in a six-inch format and sold to you for 7 yuan.

What began as a way for most people to see the broad empty rice paddy horizons of Pudong, the reopened Bund provides once more the long distance views along the Huangpu River. The bonus of the older colonial Shanghai architecture on your shore and the modern twenty-first century city farther away across the river is one factor which makes this esplanade special. The landscaping of the Bund now provides some greenery and plantings which soften the view of the “heavy” Art Deco and neo-classical architecture of Bund buildings.

This new modern Bund is vastly increased in capacity, and that will be the spectacle. On busy days you will be able to see the population of a small city (Chinese small, of 100,000 or more) as it moves to and fro. By its popularity, it is the obligatory stroll to take in Shanghai. And by its popularity you will admire so many people clustered together on the shores of this fairly humble river.

After all, the Huangpu is merely one of the last tributaries to the great Chang Jiang (Yangtze River). The Huangpu is a quite muddy grey body of water with not much in the way of beauty. In itself, it has less interest than the Thames which significantly rises and falls with the tides along stony banks in London. The Huangpu does not inherently have any magic to become a magnificent world-class waterfront walk. However, place it along a gentle but sweeping curve in the river in one of world’s most populous cities and it can become significant.

The new Bund is built for the 21st Century. It is accessible in a land known for its barriers to the handicapped. It is prepared to handle the burgeoning humanity populating and visiting the city. The Shanghai city government has pledged no unauthorized merchants or beggars on the Bund.

They have special Bund sweepers, mini street-sweepers, operating to continuously clean up the trash on the walkway. Small police vehicles also slowly travel on the elevated walkway. It appears now they have organized not only the hardware of the Bund, the physical surroundings, but also the software, the essential services.

While it is massive in scale, put into perspective from the elevated platform on the southern end, it fits in beautifully. With even more massive buildings on either side, the Bund rises to the occasion of being the place where you must be in Shanghai to say you have seen the city.

I don't describe how beautiful and great this bund area is as there are hundreds of posts that tells it and I'm also the one who fell in love with this superb view from the bund .
But I repeatedly want to post here about tea ceremony scam of which even the people who would never believe to be a victim drop in the trap ,there are many of same warning on tripadvisor though .
In my 2 nights stay at Shanghai this time we happened to have met scammers ( 2 young girls ) twice around bund area when I was walking there with my girlfriend . They came to ask us for taking a picture for them and started friendly conversation ,which is just a leading phase to the tea ceremony . We said goodbye to them when they suggested going to the tea ceremony but If you go with them you will be apparently ripped off and end up paying 200 to 2000 rmb . The point is that scammers coming to talk to you are educated to some extent and speak in English or Japanese or some language other than chinese and have a very balanced opinion about foreign culture and politics and domestic issues and above all they look so innocent and not town polished ( that would be also their psycological trick . for example some articles said they , twenties girls , intentionally wear something unrefined like panda printed backpack to draw our attentions from arousing suspicion ) and smile naturally . Obviously they are acting but you'll be shocked when you realize that poverty can make the people act like a movie star . You'll be vey possibly meet them if you are a bund lover (I've met them 5 times or more totally ) so just be very careful . They are well trained and this scam is obviously well organized .

Spectacular view.
Pls chose time for visiting btw 5 pm and 7 pm, when the sunset has warm colors.
There is a lot of cafes and restaurants with good view.
Try to stay away from the central part of the road, it's most overcrowded.
the nearest subway (LuJiaZui) is about 5 mins away. Don't forget your camera.

This road runs alongside the bund, it featurse many of the old historic buildings. To get a good view of these you need to walk along this road. Off this road up the side streets are many shopping areas and restaurants

The best time to visit here is in the evening. It takes so much time to walk from the Yu Garden but it's worth while if you start walking the promenade.

This is just the same as the bund but is on the same road and can keep walking down so can get closer to the old landmark of Shanghai and new pudong just across the river. Don't miss the founding father of Shanghai 'Chen Yee' from 1901-1972.

Busy, always bustling with life & action....the Bund, although not resembling the old photographs you may have seen, is always full of life & 'happening'.
Photographers abound on this historic stretch & everyone who visits Shanghai is drawn to the promenade along the riverfront.
Across the street are the beautiful historic hotels, like the Hilton chains Waldorf Astoria, with its fabulous Long Bar.
The Peace Hotel with its rooftop area & Jazz is also nearby.

Seems to be a bit of confusion here - Zongshan Road is the street below the Bund promenade and as such it does not have the river and Pudong views. All you get is a close up to the classic Bund buildings

Went there on a Sunday, and it was really crowded. Beautiful architecture. Worth the visit. Walked along the street. The bund was right beside. Good for people watching.
