Closed - Should have read the reviews

Rookie mistake - didn’t read the reviews and spent an hour trapsing around trying to find it.

Nothing here now. Read the recommendations for other antique and curio markets.

This market is 95% demolished.
Oct 2018 • Friends
Many years ago this market was an amazing place to visit, but now it is being demolished. This is quite unfortunate. Shanghai has been destroying many old areas to build new buildings and shopping centers. This has happened at Dongtai Road and at Qibao Old Town, and many other areas too.
There is about a half a block of small shops with a few things inside but it is not worth the trip. There are better antique markets in Shanghai.

Old street, market is closed!
Feb 2018
Skip the place, nothing to see there! Just an old street, poor place. Some antique stores around, but nothing interesting or even worth the visit. I guess the market is closed!

It's really gone
May 2017 • Solo
After reading a few recent reviews, I thought there might be a few shops left...there's 1 and it's not on the main street. While it had some cute stuff, I'm not sure it's worth the trip.

Shadow of it's former self

Don't hold your breath - this market is shrinking fast. Sellers who are left charge western prices, are prepared to haggle, but only if you're prepared to barter for about an hour.

Actually not too bad
Jan 2017
Several reviewers have rightly pointed out that much of the market has been destroyed and that there are only 6 or 7 shops left. This is true.

However the remaining shops have lots of stuff at decent prices. There are plenty of Maoist propaganda posters, republican era cigarette ads, ceramics and other ephemera that will make a cool memento of your time in China. The authenticity of everything is debatable but bear in mind that most real cheap antiques probably got scooped up back in the 80s and 90s. We got a great republican era landscape scroll for 200rmb. Maybe it was overpriced but who cares, it looks dope.

None of the store owners seemed to speak English so if your Chinese skills are lacking, maybe ask your hotel staff to prepare some key words (calligraphy, landscape, propaganda etc) that you can show store owners.

This market is nothing like the Beijing one (went there in 2010) or the chengdu one (went in 2005) but still not too bad, if your thing is trawling through dusty piles of stuff looking for a bargain.

Thankfully there is a public toilet on the street so you can browse in comfort. The street is just a short walk from Lao Ximen Stn.
