The area
Neighborhood: Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.

Breath-Taking HongKong Style

I am staying at the W - so the North Bund park is just walking distance away (Puxi Side). Splendid weather, amazing view, close to Zero people away from the crowds and the best images you can get. Sitting in the park listening to birds concert - amazing Shanghai. The only set-back River bank is quite high so walking near the Huang-Pu is stopped by police … although jogging on the 2.5 km running trail is smooth !!

Beautiful promenade, interesting art and museums

Lovely to walk along the river, spectacular views. We didn't manage to visit all of the many museums and art exhibitions along the way but our sample was great and others looked excellent.

Coming along nicely
Jun 2019 • Solo
The North Bund are is coming along nicely, with the pathway along the river slowly being extended up and down river. What is completed, looks great and has great views of Pudong. Note that if you want to do a long walk or cycle, you will still need to go onto the streets to get around construction and buildings. More and more activity and things to see, plus a new shopping Centre nearby. Can’t wait for them to finish the area

Great area to walk around, with good views across the river to the skyline and interesting old buildings and architecture. The Russian consulate building is great!
