The area
Neighborhood: People’s Square
People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.

Pretty at night

Great photo op when walking past at night. Conveniently located next to a foot bridge. Not sure what’s inside.

World of joy

A hundred years ago Da Shi Jie was THE happening place in the foreign settlement area in Shanghai. Crowds flocked there to see the novelties, have fun and enjoy themselves. On the first floor they still have the "magic mirrors" which were brought over from the Netherlands many decades ago. I'm truly surprised they were not smashed during the Cultural Revolution. Some of the shows still survive. I delighted to see 4 young kids sitting at a contraption immensely enjoying themselves watching a three minute movie with sound effects provided by a young man who operated film slides, banged on a drum and crashed cymbals. You truly cannot see this kind of thing anymore which would have also amused children 80 years ago. Four floors of things to see, from beautifully woven carpets in Xinjiang, to cave paintings in Ningxia, to a wide variety of skilled artisans showing off their handicrafts, and of course, plenty of food. If you have kids 10 years or younger, they will love it - plenty to amuse them. Do a bit of research and read up on this place before you go; otherwise it will seem rather humdrum. However, if you can imagine men in top hats and tuxedos walking the hallways with women in ankle-length frocks and hats enjoying themselves with fun and frivolity, you should enjoy your time at Da Shi Jie.

A lot more impressive and interesting with more information
Jun 2017 • Business
This building used to be the pinnacle of Night life in Shanghai many years ago. The architecture is not incrediblely impressive, but the history and the stories are certainly worthwhile. It will be much more interesting for tourists if there are more explanation and information on this building. Perhaps research ahead before heading out. There is also a street behind this building filled with great little eateries, definitely a good place for a quick bite!

Nothing special

Beside shopping center, there is nothing else to see. Just that the location is different from 'typical' china. People walked the dog, location is clean and good
