I booked the "Streets of Shanghai" walking tour for a lovely Saturday afternoon. Although the guide was very nice and friendly, I have to say that I was disappointed by the lack of content on the tour. There was very little information or history that was conveyed. Mostly, it felt like we were just strolling around, making small talk. Even when I asked questions about specific buildings or aspects of Shanghai history, the answers tended to be vague and brief with very little information. I do feel bad about saying anything negative — because the guide really was very sweet — but I just didn't feel like I learned much at all about the evolution of Shanghai's culture over the last 100 years, as the tour website advertised.

This is not the tour of the top 10 tourist attractions. This is a wonderful walk through neighborhoods and markets learning the background and changes going on in them. This leads to the transition of the city as it modernizes and copes with it's growing population, while maintaining some of it's treasured historical buildings. Cynthia was our guide and I am so glad to have spent the day with her. She is extremely knowledgable and personable. When we came upon some local ladies practicing their traditional dance in a courtyard, she was kind enough to ask if we could learn a few steps. The ladies were so excited to share their culture and we did an entire sequence with them. This was a definite highlight in my trip. Our trip in the market was eye-opening with the variety of items on display. Cynthia encouraged us to learn to bargain, teaching us phrases for "how much?" and "too expensive". The dumpling snack is quite delicious and you can watch them being made in the front of the restaurant. Ours were fresh and tasty. A great break after walking. Headed to the Bund area, I mentioned that I enjoy collecting coffee table picture books on cities. Cynthia made a special effort to take us by a foreign language book store so I could purchase one. I would have never found that wonderful store on my own. This tour is a great way to get to know the city, but Cynthia made it especially meaningful.

My husband and I went to the Locals on Tap and, then, the next day, did the Old Shanghai tour. Linda was our guide and she was great. Not only did we get an historical introduction to several neighborhoods in Shanghai, we learned about what it's like to actually live in the city today. Linda was born in China, but grew up and went to university in the US. She shared her unique perspective as an American ex-pat, living in this vibrant, exciting and sometimes frustrating city. Linda was everything you could want in a guide - charming, knowledgeable and happy to share excellent food recommendations. It was the perfect way to start our visit. Highly recommended!

I took the locals on tap tour last night and had an incredible time. It was just like hanging out with friends back home, except in Shanghai! We explored some of the French Concession neighborhood and stopped at a couple of places for drinks. I got a lot of awesome tips for more things to do while I'm in Shanghai, and met some cool people, too. I highly recommend doing this on the first night you're in town. Thanks, Linda, and everyone else for an awesome time!

If you're new to Shanghai and want to explore the City beyond the major sights that's the right tour to start. Anita, my guide (I was the only one at that date) did a great job to explain everything - from local customs, visiting some backstreets or local markets. If you want to see the top-5 sights this is the wrong tour. But if you want to get a feeling for the breadth of Shanghai, its neighborhoods and feel more confident to further explore the City on your own, I think this is one of the best starts you can have.
