The area
Neighborhood: Century Park
Shanghai residents see Pudong’s suburbs as the place that grown-ups retreat to when they’re ready to settle down and stop living in the cramped confines of a refurbished lanehouse. The areas around Century Park are some of the most desirable as they are in close proximity to the Metro Lines, granting easy access to the heart of Puxi. The park itself is a huge draw, it’s one of Shanghai’s biggest and there are sports fields tucked into one of its corners, but five-star hotels, museums and great malls make life in the Century Park area easy for the homesick foreigner. And if living in a Western bubble in China isn’t your thing, there is plenty of local flavor to be had in between the major development. Some of Lujiazui’s futurism can also be seen in buildings and sculptures throughout the neighborhood as well.

- Andy HWorcester, United Kingdom14 contributionsHawkish market stall traders are annoyingYou have to ignore every shop owner who tries to drag you into their store. Be prepared to just walk past, avoid eye contact and be ignorant. Just for fun I responded to their basic English in my basic French. Funny looks ! Quality is generally poor n the cheap looking stalls , but there are some better boutique shops to be found (more like a mall than a market) selling jewellery and clothes. Samsonite and Patagonia branded Backpacks seem OK quality for around 100RMB. Got offered two ‘under the counter’ Breitling watches for 7000RMB (for both) and they dropped all the way to to 1000RMB before I walked away but the store owner followed me for 50m before giving up. If the store owners were less hawkish I would probably spend more time browsing and spending instead of walking by. I bought what I came for but not an enjoyable shopping experience.Visited October 2023Traveled on businessWritten October 13, 2023
- Willem MAmsterdam, The Netherlands21 contributionsFun activity for those that love the game of bargainingThis was fun! You really need to be OK with bargaining (a lot!), but then you'll have a great time. It might be frustrating sometimes that it will take time to understand when you are bargaining for the right price. Sometimes vendors offer you an extra small 'present' or they keep on offering you to buy more - then you are sure you have paid too much. Make sure to walk away a couple of times, and play the game with themVisited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 10, 2024
- WasanthaSamarasekeraGlen Waverley, Australia356 contributionsChoices of Brands or Copies at Underground Shanghai Market in Century SquareThis is a better marketplace in comparison to Beijing Silk Market. One section is for custom tailors. Rows of many shops full of fakes but better quality as they made for local market. Overpriced, so get ready for bargaining. Always offer close to one third of asking price. Beware of the hawkers waiting at the Metro entry as they approach specifically foreigners and accompany you to the shops which they could get a commission. If you know what you are doing, there are bargains. So explore.Visited September 2024Traveled with familyWritten September 12, 2024

Was there 2019 bought glasses ,came back to pick up after hour. Received frame but cheap plastic frame. Not one I pick from shelf. They removed one from window that you can not compare not really believe they carry only one pair. Won’t go there never again. So many other shops for glasses my friend had real deal for 30$ I payed 70 and got 10$ cheap plastic which broke.

I say this because you have to be prepared to be hassled by every stallholder that you walk past. If you glance at their wares, they are on to you! The first price given is over inflated and I offer as low as 20% of their first price and work a little bit up. Hold your ground and you’ll get it for a good price.

Definitely come here, do not be put of. It can seem a little daunting at 1st but they locals are friendly and are just trying to sell you something, do not be afraid to ask what you are looking for, just because you can’t see it!, does’t mean they do not have it. Ask and you will find, also haggle, and the take off at least 70% from the 1st price they give you.
Great experience and worth the visit.

This was the subway station closest to my hotel, so I visited the AP Plaza few times. This allowed me to get the feel of the place before actually committing to shopping.
It's huge, rows and rows of stalls selling the same items. How to normal Chinese decide which stall to finally buy at? It's overwhelming. Don't go with a headache or if you are feeling tired.
I went with the assumption that everything was fake and now that I'm home I'm more then pleasantly surprised at the quality of the items. If I went again I'd be more willing to buy those ipod ear buds.
I shopped in about 7 different stalls. Scarfs, bags, shoes, electronics, gifts, and tea. Only the tea shop pulled a bait and switch. Showed me a tin of tea but only bagged up an ordinary plastic bag of tea. It was my fault for not checking my bag or insisting on bagging my own purchase and being in a rush.

I hadn't shopped this much in a long time. The one thing I didn't like is I had to haggle for everything. I enjoyed what I thought to be good deals, but by the end of the day, I was exhausted. This was the true meaning of shop until you drop.

They’ve got fake everything there. The quality is poor in my opinion. The t shirts have branded logos but the embroidery is poor, logos the wrong size, the fit isn’t great. The Rolex watches were ok but they weren’t 1 to 1 copies. Wrong shades of red and green on the watches. It’s worth a visit but I wouldn’t go back. You get hassled on an industrial scale. I had 3 women following me constantly did I want this, did I want that. I only wanted to look on my own. I probably would have spent more than I did but they made me so uncomfortable and anxious I just wanted to leave.

Hi is the market open this week or next week? I have not left my hotel because of the virus going around but I would like to check it out before I go back home

I am not I China at the moment so cannot say. Personally I doubt it since large gatherings are not the trend at the moment but then Chinese entrepreneurs are sturdy folk. I hope that you are in a good hotel, otherwise it must be very boring!

Hello, is free wifi available in the market? Or is there a quietish cafe/restaurant nearby that offeres wifi? thanks for your help.
Written January 14, 2020
As far as I know, there is no free Wi-Fi available in the A.P. Market. You may have to look for cafes nearby for any free Wi-Fi.

Can someone check opening hours on Saturday? also how to get back from there to Pudong Airport (fastest way) thanks
Written November 5, 2019
The shopping centre is located in a metro station so the quickest way back to the airport is via the metro system.

Glasses; graduated $250 NZ from Anna’s glasses. Good lens. A large charge on credit card though. Electronics; dearer than on line. Michael Kors bags. $50 NZ. Souvenirs like pandas cheaper in the airport. Converse $40 NZ. Vegetarian meals about $10 NZ.

I would make a photographic project about "fake". Could I take pictures inside fake markets?
Written September 8, 2019
i don’t think you have a problem with that. I took a lot of picture while i’m inside the market. But some of the sellers didn’t like you to take picture of their face.

Not for me. But what i always do is i throw out all the packaging and pack it like a normal item in my luggage. And yeah, don’t buy to many of same item.
As for the Chinese officials, i never had the problems before except one time in guangzhou, i bought this cheap fancy lighter, around 15 pcs to be given as souvenir, when i'm home and open my bag, the lighter is gone!
