Don't buy at a stall near the entrance (the prices decrease as you progress). Be careful with the pricing, if you combine 3 x 10 rmb plants with a 30 rmb plant pot it becomes 130 rmb. That said, we got some nice greenery and I'd go back. The puppies, kittens biirds and rabbits? The least said the better!

Flower and bird markets often have pets in them too and you definitely want to stay clear of those places. But this market has no cats or dogs in cages so you can safely go without thinking you're going to see something hideous. Relax. This market is in Laoximen which is called 'The Old Town' so this market really is part of the every day life of real Shanghai people. It is not for tourists, it's for locals who buy fighting crickets here, or birds in cages, the most amazing succulents, bamboo items, polished stones, lots of walnut based carving, wooden items, beautifully crafted bamboo bird cages... the list goes on. If you want to buy something to remind you of Shanghai, don't go to the tourist shops, come here and buy something truly hand-crafted and traditional, a lot cheaper. The stall-holders here are honest, kind and cheerful. But don't forget, this market is not set up for tourists so don't expect anyone to speak English and don't be annoyed when they are unable to communicate with you. Take someone with you or negotiate the prices yourself with a pen and paper. You are expected to negotiate but don't be too aggresive because the prices are already pretty good and these people need to feed their families. But go - go there and take some cash and spend it here and not in the tourist shops. You will get better quality and more interesting items not made in factories in south China.

Real nice place to visit & it's quite centered as well so you don't have to spend too long getting there. You prop won't need more then an hour to go through it. The touristy at all so you will get a good look at the real deal. Zhongshan park is just a few blocks down as well as the East China University of Political Science which are both nice walks. Go in the morning hours as stall tend to close early.

This centrally located market offers great value. They sell very large variety of flowers and plants. No matter you are looking for simple water lilies or larger orchids this place offers them all. They sell also flowers to your garden or balcony. Tropical fish and plant selection is ok, but they don't have that many shops here. You find here all kind of gold fishes and typical carps (koi). They stock lot of tetras, guppies, platy, angel fish, discus, plekos and arawana. Some cichlids also present. Plant selection is sufficient. They do sell also fish fiod, aquariums and related equipment.
