The area
Neighborhood: People’s Square
People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.

Currently this building looks like it's undergoing renovations or construction as there are walls around it.
If you're on Nanjing Road already then walked by it and go inside if you're interested in shopping, but don't expect much otherwise.

The name of this store goes back to Communist days, pre-dating consumerism and branding, when stores and farms had numbers, not names. I visited this store over 40 years ago when it was the main department store in Shanghai. It was just at the beginning of 'open policy.' The staff were extremely helpful and when they did not have the souvenir that I wanted, they went into the workshop and made it for me! It has now been totally renovated and looks like any modern department store in the west. It is a piece of history, but you would never know it from looking at.

I stopped in to find an electronic item, which I didn't find, but gained an appreciation for a shopping mall that many native middle-class Shanghaiites use. I was wowed by the availability of just about everything electrically powered with the crazy three prong electric plug that the Chinese use.

Just off Peoples Square on Nanjing Road East the store occupies two adjacent buildings. It is worth seeing for the architecture but it is a normal Department Store and prices are Department Store prices. If you are looking for a bargain try one of the shopping streets in a 'Chinese' area where tourist prices are not charged.

The unprepossessing appearance belies the range and quality of goods for sale, especially on the second floor. r

I remember this store the most on my last visit. The start of Nanjing Road’s eastern pedestrianized section is marked by this large (now old school) department store. Named No. 1 Department Store for being the 1st, it is as grandiose as its superlative, albeit showing more of its age especially compared to the many malls that have sprung up in Shanghai.
This is one part of Shanghai that didn’t change for me. I remember it being crowded. I remember the long lines. But I remember just how many things one can fit in a mall. What I remember the most was why I had spent so much time inside a building. This time, I didn’t go inside.

I went along to try and find this department store as it's mentioned in many guide books as the quintessential chinese department store. It's at the People's Park end of Nanjing Dong Rd pedestrian shopping mall. I couldn't find it (until I looked up and figured I'd found the right building). There's scaffolding and building covers at ground level as they are doing renovations. Just thought I'd save you a wasted trip if you were wanting to go there!! Apparently there's a department store similar at YuYuan bazaar. I never made it to that one.

Looking from the outside it looks small but once inside it goes all the way back. There are about 5 floors. Uniqlo is also in this building on 2nd floor. There's a KFC on one of the higher floors and other eateries spread out over the floors. This shop is not for people on a budget. The toilets are clean, well for around 10.30am and they are western toilets.

this is a huge department store and takes up an entire city block.
it's a department store with multiple entrances.
it has the main department store, then it also has individual tenants with their own entrances.
there's pizza hut, kfc, muji.
by the pizza hut, there's a movie theater entrance by the mango dessert and coffee shop with escalators that will take you to the hot pot restaurant that's open till 3am.
