Neighborhood: People’s Square
People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers. Shanghai residents, meanwhile, live and work in the many residential and office high-rises. While much of Shanghai stays busy late into the night, this really is an area that never sleeps with glitzy nightclubs keeping people up until the wee hours of the morning.

On the red banners visible around People’s Square, you’ll find slogans written in Chinese, including: “Patriotism and dedication, integrity and kindness.”

Who can disagree with that?

For those of us who know a bit about China’s history, it’s interesting to be reminded of how the government continually communicates with the people. This Asian-philosophical and instructive style is unimaginable in the West.

The red banners with their elegant slogans are perhaps especially striking when you’ve been wandering among the glittering city’s numerous Gucci and Louis Vuitton stores. One system, two mindsets.

People’s Square is a great place to remember China’s modern history since 1949.

There is nothing to say or describe
A green space not even the most beautiful surrounded by modern buildings not even the most beautiful
I honestly see no reason to go there specifically
Quiet area for a walk if you are nearby but I wouldn't waste my time

Working for Disney for years, when someone asks you to take a picture of them, you do it almost instinctively. The young Chinese girls innocently giggle and tell you their Spoken English is very poor, as they hand you their camera. Just as you determine this photo should have been a selfie, with nothing of significance in the picture frame except two giggly girls, BUMP. There goes your wallet, passport, camera, whatever was in your wallet pocket. And don't place anything on the ground. You get the idea.

I took one of my free days to explore People's Square, and honestly I want my time back. I do respect the traditions of this park, but in an otherwise great and friendly city, this park is known for its shady behavior. Let me explain a bit...

The good:
The park is attractive, and contains natural vegetation and nice streams.
The location of the park is right in the heart of the city, near Nanjing Xi Lu pedestrian area.
Sundays host a "matchmaker" type event for parents of singles looking for love...pretty cool to witness.

The bad:
This area, particularly near the streets surrounding the square, is always very crowded and difficult to walk normally.
I saw a fight right off the square...I barely saw an argument the whole time in Shanghai, and was in People's Square 5 minutes before I saw the fight.

The ugly:
Pickpocketers. Luckily I knew about them before I came, so I hid my money and didn't bring my wallet.
Scams. I was approached multiple times by a young couple wanting me to participate with them in a "tea ceremony". Their names are Crystal and Peter, and I also knew about them before my visit. They take tourists to tea ceremonies to learn about tea, then charge over 1000RMB for the event. Anyone who's been in China long knows that tea is a dime a dozen.
Ripoff bundle packages to hotspots. Vendors claim that if you buy a bundle package for entry into places like World Financial Tower, Sightseeing Tunnel, Jing Mao Tower, etc. If you can add the individual prices for these places, you'd actually be charged more for the bundle.

I don't like to write negatively about what others enjoy...but I want people to understand the issues with this attraction before they go.

By the time I visited the square I was already used to the scam of young people, so called students, who ask to take their picture and then as a big coincidence they are going to a tea ceremony to which you are invited. They operate in gangs and at some places the police is constantly chasing these people away, like at the Bund. At people's square there is almost no police presence so it's their ground.

Don't ever go with them, they end up accompanying you to the nearest ATM once you are finished because you will probably not ave enough cash. I got scammed once for about 60USD but when I read in some reviews they charge 450USD it is something to be wary about.

These youngsters have an education and most of them just work part-time and choose this as a " second job" because it's nice to be outside and get easy money.

A shame there is no more information in the subway stations etc to warn tourists.

I have visited Shanghai for Can-tan Fair with my friend and spent about 1 week in China. on our last day we have decide to do some shopping and we took a TAXI from the road. actually that's the baddest decision we ever made. we got in to the Taxi and within few minutes we have realized we are in trouble. Taxi Driver took us to an underground car park and we didn't got any chance to get away from the car since its fully locked. once he stop few chines guys and three black guys came to us and start hitting both of us very badly and they took us in to a Room somewhere in that building. after that they ask money and we had few Chines currency's left with us. one guy point a gun on my friends head and another guy try to cut one of my finger. after that they took all the credit debit card we have and asking their credit limits and pin numbers. first we said we don't know the pin numbers. when we tell so they hardly hit us and finally my friend has given one pin number. then they send one guy to bring the cash. from that card they have withdrawn around 1800 $ then they released my friend. and ask him to leave. then they start hit me again asking my card details. since i am not using a credit card and i had only a debit card without any money, they they try to cut my arm. finally my friend has given his other credit card PIN to save me. from that they have withdrawn 1000$ . finally they have relies ed us after two hours of bad dream. we straight away went to the Peoples Square police station to complain what was happen but we are totally disappointed about police. they didn't care our complain and they told us if you can wait another 3 or 4 days they will try to do something. please note when we are at that room they took another foreigners ( Look like British) and done the same. so we came back to Sri Lanka with bad feelings and never ever recommending anyone to visit China. China government has to ensure the safety of the peoples who visiting their country. we went for business and there is no safety provided to visitors. also we are not recommending private TAXI please use public transport or Government TAXI service. also before you get in to a TAXI always keep in mind to note down taxi number and the Driver details its your right. we think lots of peoples having this experiance

The Tea Ceremony scam can happen in any tourist area in China, but is most common around People's Square, the adjacent People's Park and the shopping area that adjoins it. A group of young Chinese will ask you to take their picture and engage you in conversation (they are usually "Language Students" and often "visiting" Shanghai). They will then suggest that you join them at a traditional Tea Ceremony (it could also be for a drink at a bar). After your tea or beer, you will then be presented with a bill/check for hundreds of £/$/Euros, your new "friends" will then vanish and you will be confronted by some very large, aggresive men who will force you to pay.

I met a group of Germans in their fifties who had been victims of this scam when they went to the rescue of some twenty year old Dutch and French girls who were about to fall for it. This confrontation led to violence, in this case the Chinese came of much worse, but I would recomend avoiding conflict and walking away.

If you do want to rescue another tourist, approach them as if you know them, saying hi and then advise them quietly to walk away. If things do get violent, shout "Bāngzhù jǐngfāng" (Help, Police), or "Jingcha" (Police), or just "Police", this will usually attract a crowd and send these little crooks running.

As in any country, anyone who is over friendly is probably a Scammer. If a complete stranger in your home town walked up to you and invited you for a coffee, would you drop everything and go with them? No, you would politely say, no thank you and get on with your day.

Awesome place at the heart of the brustling city. Relax, take pictures or just sit there watching people and lovebirds. Just opposite of the Shanghai Museum a sprawling area where you'll find lush green area with perfectly arranged flowers.

If you lucky to be in Shanghai during weekend, do not miss marriage market right at the main entrance of the park. Its a place where mostly grandparents are trying to match their grandkids:) They are writing the brief description such as age, university/work, hobbies and of course the salary (very important fpr Chinese to find their soulmate:)
