Neighborhood: Century Park
Shanghai residents see Pudong’s suburbs as the place that grown-ups retreat to when they’re ready to settle down and stop living in the cramped confines of a refurbished lanehouse. The areas around Century Park are some of the most desirable as they are in close proximity to the Metro Lines, granting easy access to the heart of Puxi. The park itself is a huge draw, it’s one of Shanghai’s biggest and there are sports fields tucked into one of its corners, but five-star hotels, museums and great malls make life in the Century Park area easy for the homesick foreigner. And if living in a Western bubble in China isn’t your thing, there is plenty of local flavor to be had in between the major development. Some of Lujiazui’s futurism can also be seen in buildings and sculptures throughout the neighborhood as well.

My husband and I visit Dragonfly Spa at the Kerry Parkside at least once a week. Whether we go for a foot massage, head and shoulder massage, or any of the full-body massage options, we are always thrilled with their attentive, caring service. The staff is quite friendly and always courteous, and the front desk staff all speak English pretty well (the massage therapists, not so much). If you have special needs or requests (like you want them to focus on your lower back, say), the front desk staff is happy to convey this to your massage therapist for you beforehand, if your Chinese isn't up to par.
The ambiance is lovely and relaxing, with dim up-lighting, fabric-draped ceilings, piped-in bird song and trickling water sounds, and the faint and wonderful smell of massage oils hanging in the air. Everyone speaks in hushed tones, including other patrons. Whether you are in one of the main rooms used for foot massages or in one of the private rooms used for full body massages (both single and double rooms are available), the atmosphere is always calming and peaceful.
The spa offers a variety of massage services, and it helps if you know the difference between them so you know what to expect. For those unfamiliar, Chinese massage is done through a covering, as are the sports massage or shiatsu massage options at Dragonfly. You are taken to a private room where you will undress and slip into a pair of loose-fitting cloth pyjamas for your massage. Or, if you opt for an oil massage, instead of pyjamas you will be given a paper bikini bottom to slip into if you're a woman (no top -- but you are covered with a towel, so no worries if you're the modest type); men get a pair of paper boxer shorts. All are discarded after your massage.
Foot massages involve a hot-tea foot soak first, which takes place while you recline in a plush and very comfortable easy chair. They will cover you with a soft blanket and place a roll of "hot beans" around your mid-section -- and while you're enjoying all this cozy comfort, the massage therapists will do a mini-massage of your neck, shoulders and arms before they wash and dry your feet. It's delightful!
We've been very pleased with the skill of their massage therapists, and they are very responsive if you require less or more pressure. (They will always inquire if the pressure is okay, and they all have enough English skills to understand if you request "harder" or "softer".)
Dragonfly also offers facials, waxing and manicure/pedicure, and I've had or heard of good experiences with them all.
If you go on the weekend or in the evenings you would be well served to call for an appointment first, as they can get busy. But during the day I've never had to make an appointment or wait more than 5 minutes to be tended to.
When compared to prices for similar services in the US, the standard prices at Dragonfly are pretty low, though of course rather high by Chinese standards. But if you purchase a pre-paid card (which I recommend for anyone staying in the area for more than a few weeks) you get a 30% discount on all services which then makes them very reasonable indeed (e.g., an hour-long full body Chinese massage is about $16 US). Tipping is not expected.
In Shanghai you will notice that there are massage places on every corner. You can find less expensive options than Dragonfly, but you will find no better service or comfort.

The Dragonfly was located in the Kerry Center very close the the Shangri-la Jing'an Hotel--you just took the escalator down from the hotel and you were there. The 90 minute foot massage was so relaxing. Menu of services was in English and the person at the front desk spoke English. It was a GREAT experience!

We are pleased to read that you value our English speaking menu and more importantly our English speaking receptionists. It is an important distinction of Dragonfly that our friendly receptionists can communicate easily with guests from all around the world - and to make it easy for you to make a choice.
60 minutes of foot massage is terrific and relaxing - but 90 minutes is even more stimulating and relaxing.
Welcome to come back again!

Great quality massage and highly recommended for a place to relax especially after a long flight. The staff is friendly and the room is clean. My therapist is called Annie and she is very patient and professional. The staff told me they have other retreats in Pudong and Puxi. Will definitely try their other shops.

This spa is a chain but was great - the massage was very good and reasonably priced. But it was busy - the wait time for me was an hour but for others a little longer depending on the treatment. Do book a couple of hours ahead of time. Seems like it's a shanghai institution!

I was on business at the hotel next door and was a walk up for a pedicure and manicure. Although the hotel at a great spa, the prices at Dragonfly were a little easier on the pocket. This isn't cheap and cheerful, but I was well taken care of and at least a couple of the staff spoke English. My colleague who had a massage went back for another massage treatment before we left, so it was a big hit with us. I understand the massage area is well-styled and very relaxing - pretty amazing given the chaos that happens just outside in the mall and hotel!

Dear Jo,
We love to serve Kiwis at Dragonfly - and we look forward to the day we can bring our brand to Wellington.
We do strive in fact to be as "cheap and cheerful" as we can - but as you will have noticed Shanghai has become an expensive city so we had to let up a bit on the cheap but we continue to pride ourselves in having the most cheerful team members, especially our English speaking receptionists.
Please visit us again if you come back to China!

It is not my first time doing the pedicure but I have to say that this is one of the best pedicure service I have ever had.
Alice who did my pedicure did it very well. She did it cleanly neatly and gently.
She provided me me a warm blanket and I felt a sleep while she did my feet
The 1 hour service was a big two thumbs up.
Thank you Alice and Dragonfly Kerry Parkside 👍🏻👍🏻
