As Expats we were looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon. Enjoyed wandering around the area. The graffiti was our favorite part of the day. We started at Shanghai Railway station exit 5 and walked down Tianmu W Rd. Just over the bridge at the Wusong River we followed the river back to Moganshan Rd. Many studios to choose from and M50 had quite a few to wander thru in the back as well. We then continued on down Moganshan admiring the graffiti walls passing a few coffee shops along the way. We then made a right onto Zhongtan Rd which will take you back to the Metro station. No need to go back to the Railway station starting point.

A fantastic place to stroll around while staying in Shanghai. A must for all art buffs! You could easily spend a good few hours pottering about looking at some great art. Plus most of the galleries are free so great if you are on a budget.

Having read the other reviews, I thought finding Moganshan Road would be a difficult task. However, it was really easy. It is a 10-15 minutes walk from Shanghai Railway Station, depending on which exit you take. Just follow Tianmu W Road until you are at the other side of Wusong River. Then use the stairs to leave the bridge/Tianmu W Road and follow Wusong River for a couple of minutes. Voilà, you're there.

I absolutely loved Moganshan Art District! It's a lovely area with lots and lots of art galleries, and also some nice art- and design shops and cafes. I think everyone can find at least something they like, even if it's just a nice cup of coffee! Anyway, I must say that I found everything very interesting and some of the art exhibitions were really outstanding. Don't go here in a rush because there is plenty to see!

Just visited Shanghai's premier art district - 50 Moganshan (or M50). It is a bit hard to go to with no train station nearby. My taxi driver did not know where it is until I mentioned that it is near Suzhou River West Road.

However it is certainly worth a visit. As compared to Beijing's 798, this art community is far more intimate and accessible. There was a good range of artworks, although many of the artworks are rather pricey. Do check it out!

Great discovery! We found the best coffee in Shanghai - AND Hot Chocolate to die for! Great ambience with cute little tables and couches. We had morning tea here and just had to return for lunch. It is located right next to the entrance to the Moganshan Road Art area.

I went to the Moganshan 50 on 2 visits. Different artist open each time. Wonderful collection of ceramics in very back, almost missed it. Lots of talent here.

Interesting place. Taking a tuktuk taxi there is advised and will cost you under 10rmb to save you a walk in the heat. Lots of galleries and studios put together, particularly enjoyed 'Island 6' who had an interactive exhibition. It's easy to miss exhibitions which are on the higher floors so search 'Time out' for exhibitions info before going to make sure you don't miss something you really into.
Couple of Coffee shops with food at average prices.
Walking back to the Metro gives you a chance look at the gaff properly also mini mart, restaurants and Starbucks if you need it.

50 Moganshan Road is a complex of buildings chock full of art studios and galleries - all kinds of art and, in our opinion, well worth a trip or two. We went back a second time because there was far too much to see in one trip. The art is varied ranging from metal sculpture, graphics, oils, acrylics to photography and textiles, etc. Each gallery or studio had a different flavor. The best part was that it was of the few "attractions" in Shanghai that isn't over-crowded and one can take one's time to pass through each gallery or studio and often talk to the artist and/or gallery host. Definitely recommended if you like art - it's free and relatively easy to find. Best to approach from the Shanghai Railway Station metro stop. There are a couple of small restaurants in the area as well as a "convenience" store where you can buy snacks and drinks.

You should start walking through this road which leads to M50 art space. Students from art schools doing up their graffiti, it's amazing how vibrant this city is. However the big construction trucks along the road maybe a hinder and it can get dusty all the way.

There must be well over 100 galleries/studios in this area so it is not surprising much/ most of the art you will not like. But with so much variety you are bound to find things you do like.we really enjoyed wondering around. Generally speaking the better & more expensive art is closer to the main Rd but don't miss the narrow lanes as there are the odd treasure to be found. Don't bother with the food in this area & go to the French concession, we tried a place in lonely planet & very average . Getting a taxi out is a problem.
