Enjoyable, but a major complaint

Going to see jazz at the renovated Peace Hotel is something tourists do to experience "Old Shanghai." The well-stocked bar/room is old/new looking. The band plays a few old jazz standards, but it's not a place for jazz lovers (Hello Dolly? The Way We Were?). It's also expensive. The minimum charge is 300RMB ($43) per person weekdays, 400RMB on weekends. Plus a 15% percent service charge. The snacks and drinks ($15 per) will quickly exhaust the minimum (large fruit plate: $55!). The drinks, however, are strong. We had fun. The old gentlemen toot away from 6:30 PM; they are replaced by other old gentlemen at 9:00, plus a Chinese female singer who sings 20s and 30s Chinese songs (our Chinese friends told us). The acoustics of the room are loud, so I suggest sitting on the side, in a corner, if you want to converse as well as listen. I have a big complaint. The 15% surcharge "for service" is upfront, but the final bill also contains a line for "gratuity." Where I come from, a service charge is paid to servers. So I enquired of a waiter, and then a manager. No, I was told, the service charge goes to the Fairmont Peace Hotel. As I complained to the manager, the waiter's knowing smile suggested that he might agree with me. So, now, who gets the "gratuity"? Inquiring customers want to know. They also would like to know why the hotel's profit margin is not included in the already exorbitant prices, and not instead given to the waitstaff and band, who do a fine job.

Enjoyed the jazz music, some that to look foward in shanghai. Choices of drinks and price are reasonable. Atmosphere was super to end the night. Located at the center of the city.

This is in the Fairmont Peace Hotel and a must if you are staying there. It is a smallish bar where a table is at a premium. If you are a guest of the hotel can skip any queue to get in.
The main attraction is the Jazz band which has been resident for many years and has an average age well into the pensioner years. The walls show photos of famous guests who are visited the bar.
Drinks are a bit pricey but that is to be expected; service is at the bar or table service.

Underwhelming and not living up to expectations. The band seemed to be going through the motions and uninterested in entertaining the audience. If they weren't listlessly playing, they were either on their phones or napping.

Venue is very well done, however and the bar and cocktails were quite good.

Came to the club twice - what a great experience! The gentlemen performing have been here non-stop for 20 years, and hold the Guiness Record for the oldest performing group (average age of 75 years old). They start at 7 pm every night, and a lady singer joins them around 9 pm (I have actually preferred the performance without her singing...). Very kind staff and a good selection of alcohols (especially wine). Look around - you will find pictures of famous visitors (e.g. Barack Obama). Do not miss.

We were in Shanghai for a short time so we only had time for one drink prior to our dinner reservations. The cocktails were expensive but very good. The staff were friendly and the jazz band were great and created a relaxing atmosphere. Would love to have stayed longer here.

My father was born in Shanghai in 1930 and my grandparents used to go to the Jazz Bar in about 1929/1930 when the hotel was called the Cathay Hotel. The hotel really is a stunning beautiful property and the Jazz Bar full of old character and charm with excellent service typical of and good Fairmont Hotel. The music by the old jazz band was wonderful, watching older patrons having a dance and some old songs sung in Chinese and English made for a very entertaining evening. I visited with my wife and wish we had arrived earlier in the evening (we arrived at about 9pm in a Saturday night and had to wait half an hour to get a table).

For those who are budget conscious, be aware that there is a cover charge of RMB300 per person which we were told about only when we reached our table. The cover charge is used as a credit towards drinks - so we had several cocktails each that covered the charge - I would have appreciated being told about the charge when asking for the table as my wife felt it was tricky salesmanship by the bar doorman.

This is in the Fairmont hotel tucked at the back of the hotel. You have to walk past the perfectly kept hotel that is a preserved part of Shanghai's past. The bar is in the left had side and is a piece of Sanghai's past. Its a wood panelled room with a bar in the courner and all the tables arranged so that you can see the performers aranged across the front. Its a hihgly recommended place to spend an evening with a a few cocktails and a chance to listen to some music.

The live band is made up of seniors who are really good with their musical instruments. I am impressed and amazed at how well they played despite their age. The singer is also very good. This is a great place to chill and relax for the evening.

Our visit to the Jazz bar in the Fairmont Peace was excellent. The ambience was lovely and the jazz band were excellent. On the way in we met Viktoriia who was absolutely lovely and gave us some really interesting historical information; she made the evening much more interesting. We would definitely consider staying there in the future.
