Yangshan Deepwater Harbour is the biggest container port in the world right now, having bypassed Singapore recently. On the way to the port from Shanghai, you pass over the Donghai Bridge, (length 20.2 miles) , the arrive at a visitors' centre with bathrooms , a model of the port, and a cafe that was closed when I was there. You can hike up to the top of a rocky hill for an excellent view of the port and the bridge. The rock formations are unusual and present good photo opportunities. Once finished (they are almost done with phase four, the last of the construction phases) it will have 30 berths for container ships. The cranes for loading and unloading are spectacular and can be seen from several different viewpoints across the island. Go with a tour, or come in your own car. At this point, there are no facilities for refreshments, so bring your own food for a picknick.

It is not possible to enter the actual dock or container area.

We combined the tour with a visit to Di Shui Lake and the spectacular Maritime Museum. From Shanghai, this is a full day trip

Yangshan Deep-Water Port was a great escape from the hustle bustle crowded Shanghai. It was a welcome break for us from the crowd, noise, pollution, traffic we encountered during the 12days Beijing, Xian, Hangzhou, Shanghai. The drive crossed one of the world’s largest bridges Donghai Bridge and huge wind farm can be seen out in the sea along the way. Approaching the islands, tall cranes can be seen offloading and unloading mega container ships.

From the visitor centre, we enjoyed a nice hike on a misty morning. There were very few shade cover. The path was well-paved path made mostly of stairs leading up along the huge rocky formations to the main observation deck overlooking the harbor port. A leisure hike took about an hour round-trip. There is a restroom at top but advise to use it at the visitor centre before the hike and bring drinking water especially on a hot day. Not wheelchair friendly.

Due to the distance, only recommended if
one has a spare day. There are smaller restaurants but suggest to have a meal somewhere else.

It's about 90min drive from Shanghai. You cross a very long bridge to get there and can see large windmill farm along the way. When get to the island follow the brown signs to the Yangshan Scenic Area. There is a visitor's center where buy tickets to walk along the path on the ridge-line going up to the big antenna / viewing area. At the viewing area is place to sit and look out over the huge deep water port. The whole thing is a marvel of industrial expanse. You can look out in all directions and ponder over how impressive all this infrastructure is and it's purpose for moving containers back and forth across the ocean.

There are stairs around the harbour and a couple of viewing platforms in various nice spots. It's a bit far out, but if you would like to enjoy some solitude away from the bustle and hustle, this is a nice spot to go.

There's not much to it. It's a port, that's it. Yes, it may be the busiest in the world, but no layman will be able to recognize that from visiting and looking out over it from a viewpoint.

I went with a tour group. I would not have visited if I had the choice.
