We came here to see the great leader's old residence - and it's on a road with not much else to see near by. Unfortunately it is closed under renovation and has been since end of 2015. Not sure when it will re-open : sometime in 2016.

I saw an architectural walk in my tourist guide so decided to do this on my first afternoon in Shanghai. I did not expect to find a small museum in the former residence of Mao Zedong. There is no fee to pay. You walk around reading some pannels in English (or Chinese if you wish). You get some explanation about... More

Did not expect too much of this from reading other guidebooks and blogs, but was pleasantly surprised. House is a quick walk from the metro station in a nice neighborhood. We were waived in by a smiling security guard without even needing a ticket or any other ID (guidebooks stated that passport was required - NOT !). There was only... More

This is an interesting small museum, which I enjoyed. The captions in English are well written. Although he lived here for a short time, there was information here about his second wife and children, that I did not know about. If you are interested in history, it is well worth a visit.

Free to enter and had lot of English explanations from a Chinese perspective! Lots of artefacts and photographs. Worth a visit for the history buffs.

This was formerly one of the residence which Chairman Mao resided during his time as the organisation secretary of the Communist Party of China. It is a 2-storey Shikuman house located in an alley between Weihai Road and Maoming Road. This building is now a historical site under the government protection. The house contained pictures of Chairman Mao, some old... More

Staying in Jing'an

Neighborhood Profile
Jing'an
The heart of this neighborhood is the Jing'an Temple, while the main artery of excitement and entertainment is West Nanjing Road. Close to the Former French Concession, the area has a similar draw for foreign residents but displays a more commercial character. Large, flashy malls, luxe residential high-rises and trendy nightlife areas can be found along West Nanjing Road, but areas off the busy street have the same quiet cafes and independent boutiques that many people think of as distinctive of the Former French Concession. Jing'an is less encased in amber, though, and it's possible to immerse yourself more fully in the energy of China's most bustling metropolis here.
