Do not recommend for Chinese classes
Jun 2019
I took a semester of Chinese class here between February and June 2019. I am very surprised that this is one of the top universities as everyone in this school is a mess and the notion of communication does not exist. In the same way, there is a complete lack of activities for all these foreign students that come here (both exchange students and Chinese language programme students). I mean, it costs pennies to organise some very decent activities on and around the campus. Also, there seems to constantly be all kind of people on the campus which are not related to the university in any way (babies, mothers, elders). I understand it is a nice campus, but this is made for students and people who have nothing to do with the university should not be let in. The quality of the classes depends on the teachers so some classes are good while others are average. It is good if you like learning in group and repeating things but not good if you want to progress fast. I asked if I could extend for another semester 5 days after the final date was over and was responded with a very firm no, even though I was already at the university. In the same way, you need to always go to their office and fill in papers for all kind of things. You can't see your exam paper after it's been graded (seriously, what world do we live in?). Moreover, you need again to make a request to receive a certificate at the end of the semester. Because I did not fill up the form for it, I will need to wait until December to get one (it is just a printed paper, huh). Overall, I was very frustrated with their way of doing things and teachers are definitely not qualified to how to engage a class and how to maintain it at an international standard. No wonder this university always looses points because of the very few foreigners that put foot here.

Horrible Evening Chinese Program
Mar 2019 • Solo
DO NOT flush your money down the toilet by registering for the evening Chinese classes for working adults. The university seems to only care about its daytime students. The evening program is severely lacking with lack of structure and a real placement test. I was placed in their highest level class for comprehensive Chinese (out of 4 levels) where students did not know how to put a complete sentence together. I then ended up dropping the course (only to receive a 75% refund). At least I saved some time and put the rest of the money towards real classes.

Truly shameful for a university with such a good reputation.

After 10 years, I came back. Newly renovated. Many changes and development here. Always the best place to visit when I am in Shanghai.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), directly subordinate to the Ministry of Education, is a key university in China, jointly run by the Ministry and Shanghai Municipality. Since its adoption of the reform and opening up policy in China, SJTU has taken the lead in the management system reform in the institutions of higher learning, thus regaining its vigor and vitality as well as momentum for rapid growth as never seen before.
A number of its disciplines have been advancing towards the world's first-class level, such as communication and electronic system, naval architecture and ocean engineering, automatic control, composite materials, and metal plasticity processing. A batch of burgeoning branches of learning has occupied an important position in the country, such as Large-scale integrated circuit, computer science, optical fiber technology, systems engineering.
SJTU boasts a good number of famous scientists and professors, including 22 academicians of the Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, 31 "Changjiang Chair Professors" and more than 1, 420 professors and associate professors.

Great open park area in downtown Shanghai
Apr 2017
Quiet well kept garden and park on the University grounds. Looking for a spot to sit and relax among the green things in life this is great spot. Walking distance from the Crowne Plaza hotel, take packed lunch with you.

If you are in the area it is nice to have around the university, that it is a contrast with all the buildings around the neighbourhood

beautiful red buildlings like the Harvard of the East
Aug 2016 • Solo
This is one of the top universities in China and it was lovely to come here. It is a really beautiful campus and reminds me of the campus at Harvard with its red bricks. The campus is quite big and has monuments and buildings for the different faculties. There are also sports facilities like tennis and also loads of people jogging around the campus and I even spied upon a couple taking their wedding photos with a professional photographer and full wedding dress-up. It was really nice to take a look at the snippet of campus life.

Nice old university
Apr 2016 • Friends
I walked through this university a couple of times, luckily with a friend who knows the campus and could tell me about various buildings and parts of the university.

Did you know that there used to be a creek and a bridge at the main entrance?

Well, this is a good place to learn also about the development of Shanghai as a city, as this university which is currently celebrating its 120 years packs an historical punch.

You would never know it was there.
Aug 2015 • Friends
Countless times I walked right by it, or got off at its exits in public transport and never noticed the university itself. The buildings do not really stand out as anything special.

I walked around its campus green one night. There were students milling about. It gave me a sense of deja vu and a little nostalgia for seeing a 'college campus' in the middle of Shanghai.

It was pleasant in the fact that it was so normal (Reminded me a bit of some American college greens.) BUT in that respect, if you have seen a few college campuses, there is nothing really to distinguish this one except that it is in the middle of Shanghai and is probably more rich in cultural history than visual stimulus. It is also quite small.

However, it is quite near the night time outdoor street food venders so if you want something causal to do one night, wander down the street food, grab a bit, drink a beer and than meander through the campus before calling it a night.
