A bit out of the way from Shanghai city and quite a long walk from the subway station, but nevertheless a worthwhile visit if you (or your kids) love cars and have at least 1/2 a day to spare, since just a one way trip would require about 2 hours.
First of all, check out the official website for a list of cars, which will help you decide whether it's worth a visit. I personally liked the variety of cars, albeit found that a larger proportion were made up of American cars, which is not exactly my COT and would have preferred a to see more European cars.
The cars were in better shape than I expected, and although the exhibits were quite well maintained (for PRC standards), I noted that for some strange reason (and despite numerous "Do Not Touch" notices) the local visitors love touching the exhibits, especially the poor red Jaguar E-type, which was full of hand prints :(

This is the best auto museum I have ever visited. They collection of cars is amazing. There are cars from every decade from 1900 to present. There are sports cars, sedans, trucks, everything! There are brands from around the world - and many of the most famous: Ferrari, Lamborgini, Jaguar, Rolls Royce, Mercedes, Bentley, Aston Martin, Chevrolet, etc. There are rare and common cars. They are all perfectly maintained. The museum is beautiful. If you like cars - you must go here.

You are looking for something not typical Shanghai when visiting Shanghai? The Auto Museum is worth visiting. It includes a great collection of historic cars in a perfect condition with a lot of interesting background information.

We had a wonderful Sunday afternoon in June visiting the Shanghai Auto Museum together with friends. The museum is a must for all automotive fans and at the same time interesting for kids getting an insight into the last 100 years plus of automobile development. The museum is presenting a great selection of rare oldtimers and offers quite a lot of add-on information. The location is wonderful as the museum is embedded into a huge - usually empty - park which is defintely worthwhile for a 1 hour walk.

Visited on a Sunday so it was quite busy. A little way out of town but easily accessible by the excellent and cheap Shanghai subway to Anting station (near the F1 circuit), then a short taxi ride or about a 15 minutes walk. Have to admit that despite there being a queue of waiting taxis on the rank, none wanted to lose their position for such a short run, so waited for one to join the queue and asked him to take me which as he hadn't waited at all he was happy to do. No such problem on the return leg as a couple of taxis were waiting opposite the museum. Back to the subject of this review! I was honestly amazed at the wide variety of different cars from all over the world, all in excellent condition and clearly much loved. Where did they get them all from? Cadillacs, Lincolns, Porsches, Aston Martins, Rolls-Royces, Maseratis and Ferraris, plus all sorts of interesting old Chinese and Russian models. All were well laid out and the design of the museum using ramps between the floors reminded me of the BMW Museum in Munich. I really recommend this museum to anyone interested in cars and transportation. The Dutch GM of my hotel had lived in Shanghai for 17 years but had never visited nor even heard of the museum, but will now go on one of his days off. And, there's a very good shopping mall right at Anting station with plenty of shopping and dining choices. Enjoy!

A notably unique building in a large park area provides a good setting in for the museum. Located in Shanghai Automobile City on Metro Line 11, the museum covers the early history of wheeled transport to replicas of the first powered automobiles to representative models from each era. The displays and lighting are excellently done. I enjoyed seeing Chinese cars from the 50s and 60s that you don’t get to see in the west. Also some Russian based cars are on display. There are some excellent examples of global cars as well. There are activities for kids to enjoy with their parents, so something for everyone. The gift shop has books and miniatures.

Best reached from line 11 Antling station. This modern museum has 3 floors of cars on view all in beautiful condition though I'm unsure if all actually work.
It takes a good hour to reach the museum from city centre Shanghai and of course closes Monday's. It would be a good idea if more museums opened Monday's to allow more yo see on this day for tourists
A good museum and exceptionally few other visitors enjoying the wonderful cars

Huge estate with fair amount of historic cars. I did expect more interms of quality and interaction but somehow was let down despite travelling approx 26km outside of Shanghai. 60rmb for an adult entry ticket. If you are coming all thr way here just for this, you can give it a pass unless its bundled with other visits.

About an hour's drive from downtown Shanghai, the museum was an eye-opener. Make sure to rent the audio guide (you need to pay the rent, and also leave a cash deposit that will be refunded on return). Well-laid out, over 3 floors, with a range of (mainly) American cars. The history and evolution are well charted, the audio guides at every stop were very educational, and the cars are gleaming.
At the top floor, there are many working exhibits to learn about braking, gears, seat systems etc, which were really wonderful, and what a lovely educational aid for young ones to learn hands-on.
Outside the museum, there's a line-up of working EV cars. Not sure if we could test-drive them - we didn't ask.
Souvenir store was pretty limited, and you could buy soft drinks at a counter inside. Toilets were well maintained, and clean.
The overall museum visit took longer than we had planned for - would need over 2 hours to do justice. Kids loved it - boys and girls, so not necessarily a "guys" thing.
