Catholicism was introduced by Xu Guangqi and his friend in 1607, and Xujiahui was selected as the center of religion. As the first church in Western style, St.lgnatius Cathedral had been completed for 6 years since 1904, with a capacity of over 3000 people. Its gothic double spires echo the twin towers on Grand Gateway, which has attracted people a lot.

This church is easily reachable by Shanghai Metro Line 1. Get down at the station with the same name. The church was closed for renovation. The twin spires are dwarfed by the sorrounding apartments and shopping malls. So quite tricky to locate from a distance....More

Took metro line 1and alighted at Xujiahui metro station. Went to exit 3 to get here. However, the cathedral is closed for renovation. Good to walk around and admire the spectacular spires, towering over the scaffolding. Went to the building next to it, Zi-ka-wei library....More

Unfortunately you cannot get into the church right now as it is a construction site - this is good news as it means this classic period church is being maintained for future generations of Catholics and visitors. This was not really a disappointment for us...More

Unfortunately it isclosed for repairs but the lady at nearby tourist office was helpful. You feel transported back in time. Was able to attend Mass in English on a Sunday in the nearby diocese chapel.

Unfortunately for us the church is currently undergoing maintenance/renovation and isn't open to the public.

A place of worship is spiritually satisfying even if the service is observed in a language I can't verbally understand. The language of the heart is spoken here, and I can understand that language all around the world. The building is being restored over time,...More

June 2016, church still being renovated. So not much to see of the outside as its all covered by scaffolding. Cannot go inside either. Should be nearly done (11/06/16) but doesn't look like they are close to ready.

I was hoping to see this cathedral from inside, but it was closed in April-May of 2016, because of the renovation. It's already closed for long time. The bad thing is that the government is leading this job, so finishing it as quickly as possible...More
