Paid an entrance fee to go in. Quite surprised that there's a little art gallery. Architecture in this garden is a mixture of Eastern and European, quite unique. We were enjoying the serenity and suddenly we were rudely asked to leave as there is a performance going on that evening. We were there at 2.30pm and performance was suppose to start at 5pm, yet we were asked to leave immediately. Only after they asked us to leave then signs were put up to block that particular area. They should have put up the "do not enter" signs right from dawn!

Lovely old style house. Worth the 20kuai entry fee. Plenty of English, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese explanations. Enter through the house, then go into a large garden with explanations for why the owner had built each piece of the structures, pavilions, etc. lovely quiet garden when I went. Loved the explanations of the buildings, and the attention to detail the owner had put into it. Very picturesque, natural, and a great look into a Chinese old style house.

The garden is man made so there are little spots everywhere for kids of all ages.
There are rock formations that you can climb and caves to walk into, a fish pond where you can feed the fish, in warmer weather they hold plays.
And if you are visiting you must see Chen Nan-jun, the worlds best paper-cut artist. His workshop is located in the garden and his work is truly impressive and memorizing. His award winning peacock is on the wall for everyone to admire, and he can cut out your zodiac symbol in front of you if you ask nicely.

After our short ride on the river through Zhujiajiao Ancient Town we stopped at the Kezhi Garden for a short visit. It is a small garden with a museum showing some rooms of the early time.

To visit the garden and the little museum it will take a little bit more than an hour. Depending the time of the year some parts of the garden will have more flours in blossom.

The Zhujiajiao Kezhi Garden is literally the only part of the town that is worth seeing. You can get some great pictures here. It is nice and peaceful and smells of fresh air...very different than the rest of the town and of Shanghai itself.

A visit to the Garden to watch Peony Pavillion Opera in the evening. The platform is outside in the garden. Was there in October and the temperature was mild at about 55 to 60 degrees. There is a subtitle video monitor to explain the lnaguage used in the opera.

If you are in Zhujiajiao, by all means visit the place. After all, you only pay a small fee. However, by any standards, I feel that this place is not that well kept. The ponds have murky water and lack any fish. Some structures in the gardens are visibly in need of some repair. The place gives you a feeling that it has seen better days and needs to be spruced up.

Perhaps we are comparing it to another neighbouring establishment/ garden which is on the same side as this garden but just a door or two away. This other place is not advertised and is manned by an old man. We paid the same fee and entered and was pleasantly surprised. It was much smaller but we are told is a privately owned. The house was so well preserved and gave us a glimpse of what the interior of a 'stately' house in the area was (and still is) like; and the garden was so well kept, ponds with pristine and crystal clear water and not to mention, stocked with prized carp!

All the tourists looking for some gift… and sometime it’s not so easy to find some really authentic, nice souvenir. In this area you can fird hundred of small shops where you can buy jewerlies, clothes (special Chinese silk), tee and cosmethics. And if you’re enough tired, you can find a small bar, coffe shop or restaurant with a bit European atmosphere.

When you compare the Zhujaijaio Kezhi Garden with others that are in China, it pales into insignificance. It is still a beautiful garden though and worth a visit.

These gardens are so tranquil and peaceful. A beautiful getaway from all the hustle and bustle in Shanghai! Very historical and a lovely venue for performances such as Chinese Opera! Highly recommend!
