The Church is C L O S E D (summer 2021) to the public until further notice, we saw it with our own eyes
Aug 2021
It is really disappointing to climb up that hill and find the church closed. That’s what happened. The not so smart people here at TA refuse to publish this notification for some reason, so this is the second try, as I would have appreciated if someone would have told me.

Nice hike to tallest natural spot in shanghai
Apr 2021 • Family
This is a nice park. It is well shaded and you can hike up to the top of a small hill. The Catholic Church was closed temporarily, but you can still enjoy the scenic area

Church on a Hill
Dec 2018
Visited here in late September. Walked through a beautiful bamboo forest to access the church. The trail was fairly steep, but well laid out and took about 20 minutes to reach the church at a slow pace. The church sits on top of a hill and the view is incredible. This is an active church site, and mass was in progression when I was there, and several people praying the rosary outside with a multitude of tourists wandering around. It is beautiful to see, but does require respect for those there as part of their faith. As you climb your way to the Church, you pass by the stations of the cross. The are two churches here actually. Sheshan Basilica, and a smaller church, of Our Lady of Sheshan (佘山進教之佑聖母大殿). The church was build in 1863. There is also an astronomy observatory onsite that houses a fairly large telescope. Actually, with a good zoom lens, some of the best pictures you can take of this location is from off to a distance in the city., where you can capture the grand nature of this site that sits on top of a mountain. You can see the church from miles away. Actually, from a bridge at the far end of the Shanghai Botanical Gardens, you can see the entire structure off in the distance, but a good zoom lens is needed to capture the grandness of the site from there. Worth an afternoon to see, if visiting historic church site interest you.

A Pilgrimage
Jul 2018 • Solo
I am a regular visitor to Shanghai. But my first time visiting this Minor Basilica. Took a metro line 9 to Sheshan station from Pudong (7RMB) and then a taxi (metered price 21RMB) to the foot of the hill. Walked up a 45 degree slope up all the way to the Shrine. It was worth the climb in a hot summer heat. The caretaker told me that the Basilica will be undergoing renovation. On the way down, you can see the Stations of the Cross through the zig-zag path (1st Station starts from the bottom of the path). Going down this path you will come to the 3 pavilions (statues of Jesus, Mary and Joseph), just in front of the mid-hill Church. I discovered that this path is the easiest climb up through the gate to the Catholic Church. If you take a taxi, inform the driver to alight you at Huanshan Road (环山路) rather than the main tourist entrance. The gate is about 300m from the main road (外青松公路) along Huanshan Road.

An oasis of peace in Shanghai
Jul 2018 • Friends
Sheshan Church and the whole area surrounding the hill where the church stands, is a small oasis of peace surrounded by greenery. Also interesting is the astronomical observatory that stands next to the church, and is definitely worth a visit. You can get there by subway number 9 even if there is' a long walk at least 30 minutes to arrive at the foot of the hill. Alternatively, you can take a bicycle or the bus. However it will be a nice day out from downtown Shanghai.

Quite the story...

This is a large catholic Jesuit basilica built on top of a hill way to the west of Shanghai. It’s interesting from an architectural and historical perspective but doesn’t rival classical European structures.

Quiet church on highest hill in Shanghai
Mar 2018 • Friends
Church is on the highest hill (but still a short hill) in Shanghai in the Songjiang 松江 district. It’s an easy climb up. There is an astronomy observatory (fees required) and an earthquake museum (free) on same hill. Someone was giving a sermon in Chinese to a group inside the church when we visited on Maundy Thursday (eve of Good Friday).

Loved it!

I feel ignorant, but I really didn't think I would ever find a Catholic church in China, so when I read about She shan Basilica I had to go. We had quite an awesome experience getting there. It was rainy and cold but we still made it out there. It was very peaceful, the fact that the church sits on top of the hill its amazing views. I loved it and would recommend it if your in Shanghai. I would definitely return if and when I'm in China again.
