Waste of money
Oct 2020 • Family
Don't come here. The prices seem higher than earlier this year, it is 78rmb for adults and around 50 for kids including my tall 3 year old. It was totally empty on a Saturday morning (maybe because of higher prices). Place looks run down and dirty. Definitely dead insects and the guinea pigs had greasy fur and sores. It is also small too, we finished in an hour. There is a childs play area inside but it didn't look clean.

On the plus side, it's right by the river, so it's a nice walk in the area with a dedicated bike and jogging path.

Terrible animal abuse
Dec 2019 • Friends
DO NOT COME HERE!

Seriously, this place treat the animals in a terrible way. Most of the animals live alone in the cage. The cages are poorly equipped and many animals lie on a concrete floor without anything to do or anyone to interact with. Also the living area is too small for moving around. The animals seemed really depressed and many lived within their own manure. The people working there just don’t care. For instance one lama ate the plastic wall and the workers were next to it chatting.

If the well-being of these creatures matter to you, do not do the same mistake that I did and give your money to this place. There are certainly locations where the animals are treated well. This is just plain exploitation.

Terrible for the creatures
Jul 2019 • Family
I am pretty sure several creatures were actually dead :( The cages for the snakes, turtles and crocodiles are TINY and bare. I feel guilty that we even went, would not recommend to anyone! I didn't take photos because if was so sad but I wish I had now, to show people.

Not as bad as other reviews say!
Jun 2019 • Family
If you're in Shanghai, you should know that crowd is a big issue. So, if you visit any place during peak hours or holidays, you'd most likely end up getting disappointed. And especially the places that are built in-door like this.
We went here on a working day and there were only a few people inside so we enjoyed our trip. My kids loved seeing everything without any problem. When we entered we thought its too small but it has a lot of stuff inside. You can find a number of snakes (python and boa mostly), beetles, spiders, a huge variety of turtles and lizards and some frogs, butterflies, mammals and budgerigar and lovebirds (you can touch). You could easily read the name and info tags as it was in both Chinese and English. Also, the staff was very kind and helpful, some of them could speak English. The only bad thing we noticed was that most of the animals were kept in very small cages especially the big crocodile in such a tiny cage. Also, we expected a lot of different kinds of butterflies but we only found a small area where we could spot them.
If you have kids, you should visit. If not, then its best that you skip.

Sad and depressing - would not recommend
Apr 2017
Our expectations weren't super high, but we were in the area and decided to check it out. The place is run down and depressing. The displays are in bad shape and not very informative as well. There are animals as well as insects, and the care taken for them is clearly sub-par.

Avoid and do not waste your time and money here

Interesting, but felt a bit sorry for the animals
Sep 2017 • Friends
My visit here lasted for around 3 hours, but it can probably be done faster if you don't stop and read every display, and take photograph of each.
Entrance fee is usually 60 RMB, but there's some special days now from 9th-15th September 2017, where you pay only half of entrance fee (not only here but at other venue like Shanghai Tower).
There a large number of animals to see, which was really great.
But I got the feeling that the living area in which animals are situated is too small for most of them, so I felt a bit sorry for them for that reason.

Also, this place is really popular which Chinese families with small children, so there you can expect many children around you jumping, screaming and tapping the glass of display cases.

All in all, I'm glad I visited this place.

Animal cruelty!
Mar 2017 • Couples
From the name you imagine a place containing insects, instead there is a large array of animals in tiny little cadges. Not recommended to anyone who cares about animals, seeing a ferret in a hamster cage was heartbreaking. A huge turtle in a fish tank, I could go on but...

Reasonable and inexpensive place for a toddler day-trip
Jan 2017 • Family
We live in Shanghai and this is an inexpensive place to take our toddler for a day trip.

The front entrance is shabby and odd plastic cut-outs of Bugs Bunny and Pepe le Pew are a very strange way of introducing guests to a place which is about insects. Get through that and there's a fish feeding area where you can get VERY close to the fish and kids always love that part (though such proximity to the fish and the water is good and bad from a parental point of view).

Inside, you'll find a place that is much bigger than it looks and has some decent exhibits. Lots of creepy crawlies - snakes, spiders, bugs etc. There are some good class-room areas and if you're lucky, you'll chance upon a staff-member teaching kids about how spiders lay eggs or how chameleons change colour. Classes are pretty good and aimed at youngsters below 12.

Yes, in response to some of the other reviews, some of the enclosures for the bigger creatures (crocodiles and turtles) do seem woefully inadequate. We've had three trips and we have seen some improvement which at least is a step in the right direction.

For overseas visitors, English translations of the exhibits' information are pretty bad,  but I suppose you don't really need to speak Chinese to look at a snake or appreciate a sea-horse.

There's a small mammal section where you can feed guinea pigs, rabbits and goats which our son enjoys a lot.

Overall, if you're visiting from overseas or a difference province, this is not a priority. But if you live in Shanghai and are looking for a family friendly inexpensive outing, this is not bad.

Budget about 2-3 hours to see everything.

Definitely worth a trip.

Situated by the River, this is a nice little place to visit - even though it was inside. You can not always get what you want so you just gotta make do. I feel the place was well laid out, and all the exhibits were well presented. It helped me get over my fear of snakes too !! definitely worth a visit.

Natural Wild-Insect Kingdom
Aug 2015
For all of its shortcomings - yes there are some animals in less than ideal conditions and it's NOT near a Metro - welcome to China!!! this is the ONLY place in inner Shanghai where my boy could pet and feed an animal (goat)! Also has good classrooms/education team who obviously do their best to connect children and nature, again Chinese style.....
