When living in Shanghai (2000-2004) we have been to the Paramount Ballroom.
We made a reservation for dinner (not sure the restaurant is still there..) and afterwards went to another floor to have some drinks and watch the local shanghainese ballroom dancing.Really different atmosphere, very much like the 1920's, real artdeco interior and music from another era..
We were the only foreigners. It was a place where locals could practice their dancing skills, you could rent special shoes for ballroom dancing and "hire" a partner if being alone and wanting to dance. Many older ladies were accompanied by younger men from the Paramount. Pitty we didn't make any pictures because it was a once in a life time experience!
Not sure this still exists, you should try! handy when you speak a little mandarin.. or ask your hotel to make a resrevation.

The Paramount ballroom is certainly one of Shanghai's most iconic landmark and filmed in movies and TV series, the most important being Shanghai Bund. It still stands as it was amidst the modern Shanghai city today. Really iconic.

I called today to see if this place was still kicking. The lady who answered said they are planning to reopen after Chinese New Year. I would check back after the festival to see if that's the case because in this city you never really know until you see it for yourself. I really hope they are opening soon like she said.

We researched the fascinating history of this club online and went over to see it. When we arrived we found the building has been gutted and is under renovation. Could not tell if it was being restored as a landmark, museum or some other commercial property. Stop by in 2016 to see what it has become.

I visited in 2010 and had a super time dancing in the ballroom. It was a beautiful place, almost magical. I recently (April 20150 returned to find it permanantly closed. The front door padalocked but ajar enough to see the lobby full of rubble. I do not think this jewel can recover from it's current condition. It was so beautfil on my previous trip that it makes me sad to thnk of the current condition

I was dragged to the Paramount by my dance crazy partner but once there I totally enjoyed it. There were dance teachers available for both sexes, drinks and light snacks. The building and dance floor is amazing. One female teacher was patient enough with my bumbling efforts to get me most of the way through a tango. A first for me. Beware, entry is very expensive. Also beware that the subway stops at midnight!

Jul 2017 • Business
Expensive but historically accurate Art Deco restoration of the famous 1930s ballroom.
Substantial bar and tables surround the dance floor. Live entertainment begins at 8:30pm. Professional make and female dancers on hand to make you look good if you have enough courage.
Food quality was not perfect but very good, especially as food is not the main reason to go here. Best to go in a large group of friends, family or business colleagues.

Hi
We will be in Shanghai in a couple of weeks. Are there still ballroom dances at Paramount Ballroom or is it just an attractive building? Thanks
When you say the Paramount is very expensive, do you remember the cost of admission? Are you required to purchased food, drinks also? Thanks! Georgia

Hello. Is the Paramount open to the public again? What is the entry fee on a Saturday night? And - most important - do they "rent" dance shoes for the evening? Thank you!!!

I believe it is open again. Sorry, I do not know the answer to your question. If I had the opportunity to go there I would do it in a heartbeat. I had so much fun there when I visited years ago. Bring a smooth sole shoe for backup and you should be OK. They did not understand much English when I was there in 2011 so best to bring your question printed out in Chinese from google translate, Shoes will be in metric sizes so try to find what corelates to your US shoe size. I cannot put a link here but try my youtube channel SENZIGR and look for Shanghai Ballroom in the "Dancing around the world" you can see what it was like in 2011. I had an absolute blast. Bring Chinese cash, there were no credit cards then. Hope this helps

It doesn't need to make a reservation so far. For the supper time dancing is 800RMB including the dance teacher, snacks and soft drinks. There're live bands playing different music including latin and ballroom music.
