Longest ride to an old town!
May 2021 • Couples
A THREE hours ride for us from Pudong. Almost 2 hours on metro. Line 1 to Jinjang Park Station. One hour busride on the Feng Mei line straight to Fengjing. Town is serene and beautiful. As the Zongzi Festival (rice dumplings) is just next week, the whole town was at work. Fun to watch. Get to try varieties of freshly made rice dumplings. They can vacuum pack the dumplings for you if like for takeaway. Lovely experience exploring the town and then... the long ride home!

Worth the Drive
Sep 2020
We visited mid-week & off season. It was quiet, but all museums & sites were open.
For the small entry fee of 50 RMB, we were able to enter all sites within the town. To enter the water town itself payment is not required. Payment maybe required for parking car, not sure though.. Numerous places to eat. Lovely & interesting photo-ops. A temple is accessible as well. The area was clean. Comfortable day trip out of Shanghai city-proper. Would avoid visiting during holidays or the weekend as we suspect very busy. Due to time of year, most shops were closed, but that was okay for us. Worth the visit. Worth the drive. Architecture noticeably different than previous water towns we have visited.

'Well Preserved Ancient Town'
Dec 2019
Famous historical and cultural water town of China. Yes, well-preserved and typical reflection of old town. Enjoy the boat ride and the scenic view of this historical heritage. I am very fascinated by this Fengjing ancient town.

Group of 12 in Fengjing
Dec 2019
We were a group of 12 people visiting Fengjing Watertown.
Beautiful scenery. We had a great time there: boat, food, kind people.

Time recommended: half a day / 6h

Compared to Zhujiajiao:
- fewer people (we were the only tourists there),
- less noise
- not touristic: almost if no souvenirs shop
- Zhujiajiao has a pungent smell due to the meat or the water

Note: as it is less touristic, it is possible that you will be asked to take pictures with you. Smile and enjoy the moment. It is very funny

Peaceful and beautiful
Sep 2019
Maybe it's because we visited in September but the tranquility of this place was glorious. Just locals dotted about chatting or making traditional crafts or street food etc. A beautiful rest from the hustle and bustle of downtown Shanghai, Research the bus station though if going from Jingjiang Park, downtown (12 rmb) - easy enough at the Shanghai end, but we had no idea in Fengjing so grabbed a car back (200 rmb) to our place south of Shanghai.

Well worth a side trip
Aug 2019
We stopped here on the way back from a factory visit to another City and were very pleasantly surprised. The place is charming and well worth going. The people were also friendly and accommodating. We visited late afternoon, and experienced what we suspected was the quiet period with not so many tourists. Largely untouched, and very well controlled. Super clean and genuinely old ambiance

Beautiful town
Nov 2017 • Solo
Beautiful ancient town. worth visiting if you have a half day in Shanghai, although it has become little touristy with Starbucks etc. Getting there was quite easy.

I took Line 1 to Jingjang park station and got out of exit 2. Walked right to the bus terminal. Walked to Feng Mei line ticket counter on the right side and bought a ticket for 12rmb. Stood in the line for Feng Mei line. There is a bus for every 20min from 6am. ( attached time table) I got down at the first stop after an hour drive. The bus stops in the middle of the road ( it is not the last stop as the bus goes to the terminal) and walked to the tourist information center got a map. The bus stop area is very modern and you need walk for 10min or so to reach the old streets. I dint buy a ticket and walked on the left side road to reach canal. There are 4lanes of old street along two intersecting canals. It was drizzling and not much crowded. I spent around 2hours walking around and the views were beautiful.

Getting back is little confusing. I went to the tourist information center and got instructions ( attached here) and still it was confusing for me. You have to stand in the same place where you were dropped off ( under the big TV screen ) to catch the Jin Feng line (金枫线) to go to terminal bus station. There is a bus stop 10meters just back of you from the road where a Jin Feng line (金枫线) bus stops. This is what confusing. But that bus goes on the opposite direction. So, you make sure you stand on the road where you dropped off and when you see a Jin Feng line (金枫线) run to the front door. It takes 2rmb to the bus station. You will see Feng Mei line also stops there but, they won’t take you.

You will be likely dropped off at the entrance of the terminal. You just cross the road walk right in the corridor of the big building. In 2min, you will see a big glass door on your left, once you enter there is a ticket counter for Feng Mei line on the right side. Stand in the line for the bus and get down at the last stop at Meilong station, the same place where you boarded the bus.

Shanghai daytrip to Fengjing Ancient Town
Aug 2017 • Couples
Relaxing & beautiful place depicting everyone's internal vision of old China, - waterway canals, cherry blossom trees. arched bridges, beautiful architecture, history and happy people. In many of the daily activities tasks are done "the old way" a there is no need to rush - the pace is tranquil. You need to look at what is happening around you - see the people sweeping the street with twig brooms - not commercially made brooms or mechanised street sweepers.

Make the most of it while it lasts.
Sep 2017 • Couples
I was very surprised to visit, what might seem to be, one of the few remaining, long lost gems, examples of the old canal/waterway architecture/culture of Fengjing “Ancient” Town.

As some others have mentioned, it does appear to be an undiscovered gem, off the normal tourist trail. You can sense this as when locals want to take your photo, being the one of two western faces, in a mainly Asian tour group.

Again like most say, it has a very real old world charm about it, with quaint residential buildings lining a beautiful tree lined canal area, with untouched buildings, covered canal walk ways, arched small bridges, crossing the canal for pedestrians, small tea(and coffee) shops and plenty of small eating places, along the canal and back streets. At no time, does the anything really intrude on the age old canal/streetscape. You can image you have been taken back to a lost era, rarely seen in today’s hustle and bustle of Shanghai today.

Make the most of this hidden gem while it lasts. This is how I remember experiencing this part of China 20 odd years ago, where the old canal culture was still common, yet to be invaded by tourists, high rises or the sight and sound of developers destroying what was part of China’s rich and cultural heritage.
