This is a rather small but interesting museum. Two old trains on display in the outside area and one floor of displays, mostly in Chinese. There is a cool engineers simulation of driving a train, complete with sound effects. Admission is 10 Yuan.

I took my kids here and they enjoyed it. However I wouldn't necessarily cross town to bring them there as this is more of a museum for serious railway buffs than for kids. The majority of the displays have Chinese captions although there is an English language audio tour available. If you are nearby it will kill an hour or if you are a serious trainbuff it is worth a stop in. The price is right too : 10 yuan.

I went with my son and my dad. My dad wished that the captions were in English - the only thing in English was basically the headings of each of the sections. My son liked looking at the trains outside, but we wished you could see the inside of some of them. He got to sit with the other kids in a train driver simulation.
They have a ridiciuoulsy long closing time for lunch - I think you need to arrive before 11 AM or after 1:30 PM.

For a museum that's supposed to talk about railways of a fairly large area, in a country that greatly values its rail infrastructure, it's surprising that the museum is so tiny. The building has more than one floor, but the actual museum is just on the ground floor. There are only three original trains on display, one on the outside and one on the inside. They also haven't decided if they want to include English captions or not; some exhibits have them but most don't. Also there seems to be too much focus on important people who rose the trains.
Other than that, as a rail enthusiast I enjoyed the museum a lot. It has a bunch of models of Chinese trains and a story that tells the development of rail in Shanghai and its surroundings. Pity it's so small, but for a quick visit and low admission fee it's worth it.

Shanghai Railway Museum - for rail enthusiasts only, all in Chinese
Realities:
- entry fee: 10 rmb for adults; kids free (I can see why!)
- nearest Metro is Baoshan Road, then walk out and RIGHT around the block
- very strange opening times: 9am to 11;30am; 2pm to 4:30pm (!? long lunch time for staff)
- very FEW hands on but for a simulator which did not open until 3pm and then EVERY child wanted to play!
- there are many great artifacts here... but nothing is in ENGLISH
- cannot access the 2 trains and 1 model train, in the forecourt
Top Tips:
- arrive at 9am or 10am ; NOT between 11 and 2
- bring your own water/snacks.. no shop
- ASK for the English language guide .... they HAVE it but will NOT give it until you ask....
okay .. interesting but ?? worth effort of crossing Shanghai
*** Maglev Museum is easy to get to and user friendly compared to this museum, sorry!

This is a smallish museum within walking distance of Baoshan metro station though if you don't speak Chinese it might be difficult to find.
I visited a far better railway museum in Beijing so don't expect to see many full sized engines here and most information is in Chinese.
It was a very hot day and a sit down would have been nice but no seats were available.
It's a pleasant building and I enjoyed visiting as I had an afternoon to spare.

(Recommended between 14: 00-15: 00) - Just before returning to your hotel to rest before the evening, we recommend you stop and be impressed by the Shanghai Railway Museum, a small museum that tells the story of Shanghai Train through pictures, books History and various objects. In the museum you will also find a display of several original carriages. If your children love trains, they will definitely enjoy the museum.
How will you arrive? Take the subway line 1 and get off at Shanghai Railway Station. At this station, switch to line 4 and get off at the nearest station, Baoshan Road. The museum is only a few minutes away from the station.

Situated (hidden) amidst residential block towers, this musuem documents the history of railways in Eastern China and Shanghai. The steam locomotives and compartments exhibited here are made in the US dating back to the early 20th century.
The history of the railways in China are brought back to memories with photographs, as well as the tools and equipments used by the railway men during those days. The building the museuem itself is a cultural relic which is well maintained.

Many Chinese museums are full of repro. Even the building itself is the original main railway station- very grand. Only two locomotives outside but lots of small artefacts inside. The black and white video is well worth watching.

While not a lot of actual trains here, the displays are excellent and very informative. Many have commented there is little English, but actually there is a free Audio Commentary available that is in really good spoken English and very informative too.
Admittedly this is probably a museum for train enthusiasts, but I loved it. Went for an hour and ended up spending the rest of the day there. Then went back the next to finish my tour.
Staff were very friendly, professional and helpful, even staying a little bit later, before asking if they could go home now when I was engrossed in a display. I have been three times now and still find new things each time.
Location is a bit away from the main tourist area and some taxis do not know it, but it is around 800m from the Baoshan Road Station.
