Finally get to see the twin pagodas up close. Constructed so long ago during the Northern Song Dynasty, they are amazing. Lovely town to visit. Lots to see and shop and eat. Line 11 to Nanxiang would take you there. Convenient.

A short walk south west from Nanxiang metro station (line 11) this water town is much quieter than others in Shanghai. Take exit 2 and follow Zhongjia lu down until Guyiyaun lu then turn right and immediately left down Heping street, a pedestrian street running next to the canal. It is a short walk, around 15 minutes and once on Heping street a very pleasant one. Both Tan garden (30 yuan) and Nanxiang temple (8 yuan) located in the ancient town are well worth a visit. I have visited quite a few of the water towns around Shanghai and this is probably my favoriate with some good street food and space to move around as it is less well traveled by tour groups. Few of the food sellers and shops keepers speak English so if you have no Mandarin a bit of pointing and gesturing will be needed.

When visiting Shanghai, a visit to the charming and little-known old town of Nanxiang is a must. Use the subway line 11, leave at the Nanxiang station, get South to the next main street, turn left and walk for about one kilometer. The gate to the Ancient Town of Nanxing will be on your right, easily recognizable because of the twin pagodas on both sides of the entrance, over a small bridge. Admission is free. The old town consists of a number of narrow streets lined with all sorts of shop and canals. Numerous restaurants offer a rich variety of specialties with cooks preparing food in front of you. Information, including a detailed map, can be downloaded from www.nxlj.cn .

In the center of the old town, there are a large temple (Yunxian Temple, not visited) and a beautiful place named Tan Garden. Tan Garden was the private garden of a scholar and artist in the Ming Dynasty. It was carefully reconstructed and it opened to the public in October 2011. Explanations are given in Chinese and English. It contains several very nice buildings with ancient furniture and a cute pond. It is a peaceful and relaxing place worth a visit.

Entrance fee is 30 Yuan (5 Yuan for seniors).

Some people might already be familiar with the name of Nanxiang mantoudian 南翔馒头店 which sells xiaolongbao at Yuyuan. If you like it there, you may love it here as this place is the original one. Its wrapper is thinner than Yuyuan's and has more soup inside. The price for 16 pcs. of pork xiaolongbao is only 30 RMB. and for crab or prawn are only 56 RMB.

The town is quite peaceful and nice, worth spending a half-day. Just take subway line 11, off at Nanxiang station, exit 2, walk downstairs, head right to the taxi stand then you will see the road name, Zhongjia. You can choose either catching a cab or walking from that point. The taxi costs less than 20 RMB. (depends on the traffic and the color of taxi you take, the orange starts at 12 RMB. the others (blue or green) starts at 14 RMB. If the choice is walking, just cross Zhongjia road and walk straight along Minzhu road. Nanxiang would be on the right side.

This town is actually smaller than Qibao, less busy but more charming and relaxing. If you like the ancient Chinese costume, just choose one in that town. For the foods, fruits and vegetables, the price are normal and reasonable, no need to waste your time for negotiation.

There is Tan garden inside, entrance fee is 30 RMB. Furthermore, Yunxiang temple inside the town is nice and quiet, good for a bustling escape. The entrance fee is only 8 RMB., really worth a visit. Especially for Buddhist, this place is totally different from Jing an temple, the elderly locals come here to pray and socialize with others. This place is real, not the commercial set-up.

For the subway line 11, you can also visit other temples like Zhenru temple (Wooden temple and Longhua temple. Just get up a little early to enjoy 3 temples (1 in ancient town) in a day.

I have lived in Shanghai for a number of years. More recently I decided to start exploring the outskirts of the city in an attempt to discover the less traveled areas and have some new experiences

To that effect, decided to jump on line 11 and head over to Nanxiang.

Once you reach the Nanxiang Station (if you reach any of the Jiading stations you have gone too far) you will go through an almost empty shopping mall and get out and make it to Zhennan Road and then to HuYi Hwy and as you walk away from the subway station you will reach your first destination - the GuYi Garden.

Then from there you can head to the Old Street - at MinZhu Road (at the intersection of Minzhu Road and GuYiYuan Road ) you can turn along MinZhu road and will get in the middle of the old town.

From there you can visit also the Yunxiang Temple (also known as LiuYun Buddhist Temple)

Plenty to see and experience. I will write some more in a separate entries for GuYi Garden and another about the Yunxiang Temple. You can also check out my blogs with photos and stories about Shanghai and Nanxiang and other parts of China. Happy Travels

Thanks to TripAdvisor for this recommendation - it is definitely a good trip to do when you are in Shanghai. As people have advised, go to Nanxiang metro station and take exit 2 - then follow Zhongjia Road into Minzhu Road and walk along as far as Guyiyuan Road before turning right and then into Heping Street. I liked the walk along the canal here and if you go straight on, you will reach the Ancient Town. There is plenty to eat here and the main things to see are Twin Pagodas (free), Yunxiang Temple (Y8) and Tan Garden (Y30). I didn't do the garden but the temple was worth it - climb the tower to get a good view over the area. On one of the side streets, there was Uighur bread being cooked fresh to order for Y3. So tasty!

I would recommend taking the metro and then walking as you get a taste of real Shanghai life that you will miss if you just take a taxi. The metro was only about Y5 and the walk to the town passes some interesting areas. Just print or save a map of the immediate area from Google so you have a point of reference if you get lost.

A week after visiting Zhujiajiao, which was packed with tourists and tourist-trap stores, we stumbled upon a smaller but less crowded water town: Nanxiang. There're two gardens, twin pagodas, and authentic xiaolongbao restaurants all over town. It's the only water town worth visiting in Shanghai.

1. The name. As always, there is confusion in translating a name from Chinese into English. There are two exactly the same listings on Tripadvisor: Nanxiang Ancient Town and Nanxiang Old Street. The exact name is Nanxiang Ancient Town, Jiading District, Shanghai 201802, China. As Tripadvisor is reluctant to merge them, I will list my review in both!

2. How to come here. Take metro line 11 to Nanxiang Station. Take exit 2, walk downstairs to the right, first street to the left. This is Zhongjia Road which after the crossing becomes Minzhu Road. Always straight on for about 15 minutes, at the crossing with Guyiyuan road you see at your right across the street the entrance to Nanxiang Ancient Town, the Heping Road. Walk straight on for another 10 minutes.

3. Review. Nanxiang Ancient Town is very picturesque and peaceful, no Western tourists (except us) and delicious food available. Both the Yunxiang Temple and the Tan Garden are worth a visit, see the separate reviews.

If you want to visit an ancient water town and don't want to aggro of having to travel a long way this is the one to do. We did it easily without being able to speak a word of Chinese. Easy to get to on the metro with a 25 minute walk. Lots of shops and food stalls and interesting museums an gardens. Good place for photos of canals, old houses, gardens and pagodas.

This was an interesting little area to visit, but I don't think I will come back. It took me more time to get there than I actually spent visiting the area. This is definitely not a touristy area. I am sure I was the only foreigner there on the day I visited.

Line 11 to Nanxiang subway station. Took about 40 minutes from Shanghai Railway subway stop. Use exit 2 and walk south on Zhongjia Road. This road is about 100 m from the exit. Walk along Zhongjia Road for about 300 m and come to an intersection. This street then turns into Minzhu Street. Walk along Minzhu for about 1 km and you will come to Guyiyuan Road. Look across the street to the right and you will see an entrance. This was the entrance I used, but if you continue further on Minzhu you will come to the main entrance on the right.
