We were on a cruise, and had realized early on that the tours the cruise provided weren't what we wanted to be doing. (Schlepping on and off that bus with a bunch of other people gets very old, very quickly, and you only get to see what the cruise company thinks is relevant!) The tour guide had wonderful suggestions, was very knowledgeable, and also was willing to do things that were not "on the schedule" that we indicated we were interested in. The price was extremely reasonable for 4 of us, and that even included our lunch, which included so many dishes that we couldn't even begin to eat it all.. The van we toured in was very comfortable, easy to get in and out of, which was important to due one of our group having mobility issues, and the driver was very courteous and drove very safely. Our guide spoke excellent English- something that had been a issue on the canned cruise tours- and was fun to be with. This was a great way to see Shanghai!

The visit to Suzhou was only 20 mins spent in the garden after travelling 2.5 hours by car. I was the only person in the supposedly small group. So i had the full attention of the guide. Tongli is an interesting water village that I wish i could spend more time there and able to roam and take photos on my own but guide stick by me and we went around briskly and run through the short naratives of historical important people who lived there once. If i could be left alone for 15 or 20 mins it will be good but was not given the opportunity. Tour was brisk and i am back at hotel by 5pm. Guide explained to avoid rush hour. But he was helpful enough to assist me to purchase tickets for the Huangpo river cruise. Verdict: If you wish less hassle and dont mind being whisk around, take this tour. If you want more time spend on these places, take the public transport or drive there yourself. Oh ya, it was snowing when i was at Tongli, so it was a pleasant and magical atmosphere.

Sophie, our English-speaking guide, met us at our hotel on the day of the tour at 8:30am, as well as our driver with a large car. On the way to Suzhou, she talked to us about the life in Shanghai. Her English is very good so we could understand quite easily. Suzhou's Master of Net garden was absolutely lovely and very relaxing. Sophie had lots of interesting stories and explanations to share, and even gave us 15 min to walk around by ourselves at the end. Then as we suggested lunch or going directly to Tongli and have lunch there (lunch is not included). Tongli was beautiful and quiet, with nice gardens too, and we saw the highlights by foot before going back to the car and getting back to Shanghai towards 4:45pm due to heavy traffic. It was a great day (although expensive). The only thing is that we had to contact our guide ourselves to agree meeting time at the hotel the day before the visit only - we would have preferred the guide to contact us directly and this to be agreed earlier.

We organised a day tour to Suzhou and Tongli and it was one of the best days !! Our guide Candy is very knowledgeable and gave us a lot of information not only about the tour and the water villages but also about the life style, about China, the economy, the politic...and it was a very pleasant day. And her English (she learned English watching TV shows !!) and sense of humour were flawless !! Suzhou is a bit more touristic then Tongli, and was very busy, but Tongli was amazingly quiet, tranquil and beautiful. Candy organised for us to eat by the canal, and ordered a few local dishes for us to taste (water chestnuts and lotus seed, but you can choose anything to please your taste buds. A tour I highly recommend !

We started our 10 day tour with China Tours in Shanghai. We had already been there a week on our own and then began our tour. We deliberately didn't visit any of the places that we would see on our tour. Sophie Lee was in the lobby of our hotel waiting when we came down. She did a wonderful job showing us the Shanghai Museum, Nanjing Road, Yuyuan Garden and the French Concession. We topped the day off with the beautiful lights on The Bund. Sophie was a perfect guide - full of local knowledge and a pleasure to be with. We really enjoyed everywhere we went. My husband has a hard time hearing and he had no issue following Sophie. This was something I had worried about but all went well. Every stop we did with China Tours well done and I would definitely recommend them!!
