It is such a large area perhaps choose which part of the bay and tributaries you want to explore. It probably is best by boat but there are many water side areas to observe wildlife and nature. As with any outdoor activity check the weather,...More
The water here is so full of crab, that fishing from the smaller piers for anything else becomes frustrating. These little bait thieves are everywhere,as are those pesky hardhead catfish. The threat of vibrio is also a concern in summer months, making the thought of swimming here in the...More

New GS/Fort Morgan visitor (3 Replies)
We have been vacationing on the Outer Banks for years--on Hatteras Island near the lighthouse. We are planning to vacation in GS/FM in May and are curious about how our "daily activities" in Fort Morgan will compare to our OBX favorites! I think I have the housing figured out, but my husband likes to surf fish and we have always had fun crabbing in the sound on Hatteras Island. How is the surf fishing (I assume he'll need a license) and are there crabs in Mobile Bay we can try to catch??...More

To address the crabbing question, most people take a flashlight and a net out on the beach at night. You can do a search about it on this forum. I have been to the OB, but I live here :-) I think you'll like it!

Ferry from Mobile Bay to Ft. Morgan (15 Replies)
Has anyone used the ferry to get from Mobile Bay to Ft. Morgan, rather than using the interstate for the last part of that drive (to Gulf Shores area)? We're going to GS in July and are staying in a beach house on Ft. Morgan. Some of the family is thinking it might save us some time to take the ferry from Mobile Bay. So, I have lots of questions. Is the ferry ride faster than driving out to Ft. Morgan? Is it expensive? Is it safe with little kids on board (thinking about getting out of car...More

Best route from Hernando,MS to Fort Morgan, AL (6 Replies)
We booked a beach house in Fort Morgan for the month of October. We are thinking about trying alternate route to Fort Morgan. Anticipate arriving in Mobile around 2pm on a Monday afternoon. Would like to go the west shore of Mobile Bay to Dauphin Island and take the ferry to Fort Morgan. Which is the best route if entering Mobile from Hattiesburg to Dauphin Island? The beach house is about a mile from Fort Morgan.

Two things ...this route does not go to Mobile, and ..are you going to Hattiesburg for a reason.? Why not Meridian then 45 to north Mobile?
