It has been some time that the Melaka River had its clean up started. But if one stays at the newer Melaka Raya area, most of the time is spent shopping and eating there. So it is easy to miss this enjoyable walk.
There are shop houses that open their back doors to the river with brightly painted walls and murals to attract attention. The river walkway allows one to walk next to the mangrove trees.
Now and then, a hint of the old river banks appear in the shabby squatter constructions still inhabited.
We walked from Christ church to Kampung Morten but I'm sure the rest of it would be nice as well.
Be warned that several properties adjacent to the river bank are fenced up and you have to exit from the river walk to the main road, in order to get to say, your hotel.
Enjoy!

The banks of the Melaka River are mostly concreted, with a pedestrian walkway along each bank. The river is crossed by frequent bridges so that short or long walks taking in both banks are possible. The banks near the Stadthuys are very touristy, with bars and restaurants, but the further you walk upriver the less touristy it gets, until Kampung Morten, a traditional Malay village surrounded by the modern city. The river can be explored in a rush from the tour boats, or in leisurely fashion by walking. A few semi-wild stretches of riverbank are home to large monitor lizards, and one evening I saw a crocodile midriver. At night the banks and bridges are lit up for a very different experience.

Early morning or evening walk is the best (cool weather walking is the most comfortable). Or if you don’t mind, you can also take the river cruise bot one way to one end and walk back down (depending on where you stay). The murals on the wall is a little wire but adds to the charm of the place.

This is billed as a river walk but really there is little to see of interest. Once you are beside the river either walk into the town or use one of the trikes to peddle you around . Cheap enough for a 45min tour they will wait for you at each place of interest. I would recommend as it was so hot and exhausting and they know where to go instead of working with a map if you have limited time .

The Melaka River passes through the historical part of the town which is declared a UNESCO heritage site. The buildings along the river are painted with cultural murals and wall art. Enjoy a number of cafes along the river including Hard Rock Cafe, Gravy Baby, etc. This area is worth exploring on foot.

The River Walk is a pleasant way to see the historic centre of Malacca. By day, it’s hot and stuffy, so I would recommend doing the walk in the cooler parts of the day when you can really appreciate all the murals and architecture. It’s also fun walking along the river at night because much of the river is lit up in multi-colour. It does look a little kitschy at night with all the lights, but certainly not bad taste. The river walk is a great free activity to do in Malacca.

The riverside and the bridges across the river are beautifully lit up in the night. It is best to go for a walk in the evening.

Malacca is too hot in the afternoon and walking along side the river was such a relief for us when the temperature cooled down after dark.

The colorful murals painted on the walls of the buildings alongside the river were nice to see. There are restaurants and bars as well where you could just sit and relax watching the boats pass by.

Best part of Melaka travel is Melaka River.
You can do so many things there.
River cruise will give you the overall experience of the city as this river goes to almost every part.
You can have River walk with your family and it will be great if you do it in evening as the lights around the river and tress are just amazing.
Last but not the least you can have tea/coffee /snacks at great cafes

If I can only choose one thing to do in Melaka, this is probably it, walking along the river; one time in the morning and one time at night (is it still counted as one?). By day, take in the view of shop houses (and imagined about life once was) and the mural arts along the river showing the creativity of locals (there are many on both sides, so make a turn around). At night, the whole river was lighted up, full of bars and restaurants filled with people and noises. A great place to bar hop, enjoying drinks, food, live music, or simply watching people. Local people are quite friendly and kids are welcome everywhere.

Really vibrant. If you keep your eyes and ears open there are so many little quirks to discover. A whole range of whimsically-named hipster cafes, murals, and a great place to people watch - both on land and on the water as the boats go by.
