Unfortunately our guide is not a guide but a driver. He dropped us in this great place and came to pick us after 2 hours. We had a hard time trying to ask about places and read some signage to understand. Later on, I came to know that what we saw was The Proclamation of Independence Memorial.

This is a memorial dedicated to remembering the moments of Malaya before independence. Nice place to remember and review our country's history. Air-conditioned and free entry. When I went, the place closed at around 4pm. Right opposite of A'Famosa and walking distance from the Mahkota Parade Mall. Recommended if you are a history lover.

Better known as "Proclamation Of Independence Memorial." The museum was a former social club/meeting place of British Malaya. Britain control the area for much of the 18th through 20th century. Malaysia gained its independence in August 1957. Prior to its use by the British, the building used to be a Dutch colonial mansion. The museum is dedicated to taking us through Malaysian history, its culture and its bumpy road to independence

The Proclamation Of Independence Memorial is actually a museum dedicated to the independence of Malaysia and the event leading up to it. The museum is laid out in chronological order starting from the first wave of European colonialism to the ending of World War II, followed by the movement to achieve independence from the British Empire. A large section is dedicated to the actual independence. A very informative museum, beautifully presented and free. You probably need to be a local tor political scientist to appreciate the information in such depth.

The beautifully restored, once very exclusive British Colonial Melaka Club now houses the Independence Monument Museum. The building, located in Jalan Bandar Hilir, behind St Paul's Hill and just to the East of A'Famosa and the Sultanate Palace, is arguably one of the best British Colonial buildings left in Melaka. It now contains the Museum which tells the story of Malaysian independence, including the period of the Communist insurgency, from an understandably strongly nationalist point of view. Entry is free. For the history buffs it contains a good deal of interesting materials, including the little known fact that Freedom was first announced in Melaka, BEFORE the announcement from Kuala Lumpur. There are several well constructed dioramas, one for example recreating a country road block during the Communist insurgency. Several old , Colonial era schools still teaching students, are a little further down Jalan Bandar Hilir.

Melaka Proclamation of Independence Memorial displays records and photographs on the early history of the Malay Sultanate. It's divided into several sections, the memorial also houses an extensive timeline covering the country’s journey to independence and the development of modern Malaysia. Set up in 1912 in an elegant Dutch colonial mansion that used to house the Melaka Club making it the social centre of British colonial Melaka. The two golden onion domes flanking the top of the Proclamation of Independence Memorial’s portico beautifully embellish the already-stylish stark white stucco. The Proclamation of Independence Memorial has permanent exhibits of historical photographs, dioramas, manuscripts, old currency, slide shows and films chronicling Malaysia’s fight for independence, all displayed in chronological order.

Splendid colonial building with mix Dutch colonial and Malay architectural influences. I had to come four times different days to be able to enter, as the place seems to be regularly closed during official opening hours…
The rooms inside display the journey of Malaysia from independence to modern times. Sadly, the exhibitions don’t take advantage of the beauty of the building, its volume, light and materials. Big panels of tedious summaries cover the walls all along the visit. Most museums around do much better.

This is a nicely-sequenced exhibit that suffers from the universal Malaysian museum problem of poor lighting. With a facelift, it could be excellent. The real star is a room full of political cartoons from the 1950s, which really put a fresh and humorous perspective on Malaysia's independence.

I suspect that the level of detail might be a bit much for foreign visitors who are completely fresh to the subject, but it's rewarding for Malaysians who know the basics already.

I really didn't know much about the history of this country aside from that it was colonized by the Portuguese, the British, and the Dutch. It also fell under Japanese rule for a period of time.
This museums expands on all of that and presents the history of Malaysia divided up into galleries. One gallery focuses on how the states began to unify, another gallery focuses on the struggle against foreign powers. And then one of the latter galleries discusses the "emergency" (the fight against Communist insurgence). Nearer the end you'll find a gallery that features a roll call of Prime Ministers and their various accomplishments.

I liked the gallery that focused on the fight against colonial rule the most. That section also covered the Japanese occupation. That kind of stuff just interests me in general. I took a lot of photos so I could look things up and find out more information on my own.

In the end, I probably enjoyed my time at this location than at the other popular tourist spots like the ones in the Red Square area. I think it's perfect that this place is here as a bastion of Malaysian independence while surrounded by buildings that were once representations of foreign dominance and power over the local population.

Plus, this is free which is a great bonus.

This memorial is quite old. Since I was at primary school, the building still the same. However, the contents in the memorial is updated. It is about the journey of Malaysian independence from colonial ruling to the current ruling party - UMNO led by PM Najib Razak.
