The architecture of the was amazing. We went there for mid night Christmas mass celebration and it we really enjoyed it although it was in a foreign language. There were almost 500 hundred people that attended mass. Very well organised.

Each time we stay at Calangute we do visit this grand old Church for the English Mass on Sundays. It's a magnificent piece of architecture, the work on the altars is breath taking. I am sure this Church must be under the heritage act. A moment spent in silence gives great peace of mind. A few minutes walk away is the famous Neelam the Grand, Edna's corner and the old Portuguese home belonging to Ze and Edna Pinto. The insides of this heritage bungalow is something we only see in movies. I was lucky to view it.

One of Goa’s most ancient; the Church of St. Alex was constructed on the ruins of a Hindu shrine whose relics can be seen even today. The modern-day edifice is the 3rd ever built; the 1st was a simple one constructed in 1576 out of palm fronds by the seashore in Poriett. In 1595, the Franciscan friars, with the help of donations from the locals, constructed a church along with a cemetery in the same location and finally the current edifice was built in 1741 by the Communidades (local village communities). In 1767, the diocesan clergy was entrusted the church. The towers were erected much later in 1765 and the main sanctuary rebuilt in 1916. One can see a grotto dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes; this was the first ever grotto in Goa thus dedicated. The Rococo style pulpit was obtained from the Church of Holy Rosary (that is often incorrectly referred to as the Church of St. Francis of Assisi).

The Church of St. Alex has two towers and a splendid dome modelled on the one at St. Peter's Basilica situated in Rome. Out of the 7 altars, 3 are main and are dedicated to Our Lady of the Mount, The Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, and Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. The Church was dedicated originally to Our Lady of Guadalupe; however it was thereafter dedicated to St. Alex by an Apostolic Brief in 1815.

Though the feast of St. Alex is held each year on July 17, the main feast is still dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe and celebrated every year on December 18. Locally, this most significant religious event is referred to as ‘Khelleam Fest’. The death anniversary of St. Alex is observed on the Sunday that follows after 17th of July.

This Church has really got good view around it. Its very quiet place as it remains open between 07:00 and 08:30 only. So reach during that period. Otherwise you will find it close as shown in picture also.

The Church is one of the oldest church in North Goa. It is located on a narrow road. It is fully functional for the public to open prayers and religious events. The temple had been constructed in the Portuguese style. It remains open from 7am to 12pm and from 4pm to 8pm.

After a tiring day at Goa beaches we visited this church in the evening and it felt very refreshing. Though this church is very old but it is very clean and calm, and you will find your inner peace here.
