About
Gulf State Park's two miles of beaches greet you with plenty of white sun-kissed sand, surging surf, seagulls and sea shells, but there is more than sand and surf to sink your toes into. Inside Gulf State Park there is a brand new Gulf Front lodge and Conference Center, beach pavilion, National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World Cottages, tennis courts, camp sites, 28 miles of paved/enhance trails and a fishing pier that is 20-feet wide and extends 1,512 feet into the Gulf. This and much more make Gulf State Park the perfect in-state vacation or out-of-state adventure.

We were staying at the Hilton on the beach, so that was great. We went across the street to do a few quick and easy trails, maybe a walk around part of the lake, and check out the nature and interpretive center. It seems the trails are enjoyed more if you have more time, and probably best on bike. The indoor stuff, and rentals, were closed the day we were there. And it was a really windy day, so didn't spend a lot of time around the lake. A bit disappointing overall. For us at least.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten May 13, 2023

The beach was in great shape and the water was refreshing. I am not a beach person but it was enjoyable. I enjoyed a 12+ mile bike ride at the Gulf State Park Trail system though the bike share could use some work. I wasn’t able to use the app to reserve a bike. Thankfully a park worker/rep pulled up and was able to help me out. Traffic was busy at times in the main road but overall not bad. I wish the cell service as better overall. Trying to find a restaurant or directions (or reserve the bike share) at times was frustrating as my phone wouldn’t connect. (AT&T service)Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 6, 2023
- BeachDaddy10 contributionseBikes in the park are the only way to go!Did an eBike ride through part of the park. Rented the bikes at e-bike and board rental on Hwy 59 (just about 1.5 blocks south of Hwy 180, west side of the road). It was really a hot day...we're from the midwest and used to some shade on bike trails...don't expect that here. So be ready with wide brim hats and lots of water. Overall the trip was great. Navigation was a challenge...Use your phone app. The map the place gave us was useless (the bikes and service were excellent, but the maps weren't) We looped around the big lake on the east to the south, sent over hwy 182 to a hotel bar for a refresher then back up the west side of the lake. Somewhat time crunched as we got a late start but that was maybe 1.5 hours to 2 hours. Could have been faster. Park was pretty, can imagine a longer ride would have revealed even more.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 15, 2023

For the amount of money we paid for site 64 we were very disappointed. Check in was very smooth, but that's the only positive. We were not informed that a majority of the bathrooms were closed, but they could have provided more portable toilets. Only 2 were provided to replace 3 bathrooms. Our site was dirty and we noticed alot of trash throughout the park. It rained the 18 hours we were here, not the fault of the park, so I can't comment on the amenities in the park. We won't return.

My wife and I spent a morning hiking several of the trails in the park. Free parking, paved trails, in fact we encountered several guests who were riding bicycles instead of walking. We visited in November, so there was not a lot of wildlife activity except for birds, but it still was a lot of fun. There was minor variations in height being so close to the shoreline. There also was a well developed learning center that was visited by school kids.
Next time we likely will rent bikes so that we can cover more ground. The park is located very close to the spot where the city limits of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach meet.

Like many other reviewers, I absolutely LOVE this place. Gulf State Park is an incredibly diverse facility. Within a fairly reasonably sized footprint, you can enjoy camping, rental cabins, hiking and biking trails, numerous fishing sites including the pier on the Gulf beach, various birding opportunities including an active eagle's nest, and public beaches on the Gulf and on Lake Shelby. There is even a dog park at Lake Shelby for your pup to enjoy! There is also a really nice full service restaurant and several conveniently located public restrooms. Whether you are a local looking for ways to enjoy the great outdoors or a tourist looking for the same, this is your place! NOTE: Admission to the park is mostly free except for the Gulf fishing pier and the Gulf beach pavilion, both of which charge a nominal fee for admission.

My wife and I camp here yearly and this year we are back a second time. We come in May before the schools let out and in September when the children have gone back to school. The campground is less crowded and quieter. As for the park, it is well run by their staff. Easy check in upon arrival and even easier checkout. The park has 400+ campsites, from primitive camping to full hookups. The RV campsites are all paved and level with WES at each site. The sites are well groomed and spacious. Campers are not on top of each other. They have a large pool, tennis courts, hiking/biking trails and a lake to fish in. Laundromat on ground and bath houses spaced out well for all campers. The fees are very reasonable. We greatly enjoy our time here,

Gulf State Park is a large RV park and the sites had a nice space between each one. Park had a swimming pool and was on a lake. The beach was a short drive away and the parking pass allowed free access to the beach and pier. I recommend bringing a bicycle for easy transportation around the park and on the many trails.

We parked at the interpretive center and beach pavilion and walked on the well built trails through the campground to the lodge, restaurant and fishing pier. This is a beautiful state park with many attractions, great views and very modern amenities. There is a lot more to do, then we had time to experience during our morning trip. This is a location I would definitely visit again when I had more time to explore. Worth checking out.

We only spent two days here but would definitely recommend. It was March so we didn't swim but we enjoyed walking on the beach. The sand is so clean! We also enjoyed the bicycle share station. We used the entire FREE 3 hours to ride almost all the trails in the park. We picked them up early and there were plenty available. Just note that you cannot borrow 2 bikes on 1 cell phone. Only 1 bike per app per phone.

At Gulf State Park, there are 496 RV sites with paved pads, water, sewer, and power all available. At this same park, there are eight "primitive" sites which is an accurate description although the fee charged plus all the add ons was not "primitive".
Major complaint is that water was about a football field away.
Also no level tent pads provided although 500 paved pads had been provided for RV campers. The railroad times that contain the driveway are rotten. (I saw no other rotten ties anywhere else in the park.)
The park itself is great with miles of paved bike paths which for us was the main reason for coming. Plus the staff of naturalists who interpret the habitats of the park.

Beautiful state park! Well maintained, beautiful modern buildings that blend with the natural beach setting, and super clean restrooms. You can fish at the pier (for a small fee) or stroll the manmade docks made of the plastic boards (so no splitters in your feet), or walk the beach. It had a nice big parking lot and surprisingly, there were few people who were there. I don't know if people just don't know about this beach location, but it is a great place to get a more private secluded natural beachgoing experience that is not touristy. There were bathrooms, a water fountain, picnic tables, a bait shop, and a little snack bar. We found the signage extremely useful, particularly the pictures of the native fishes, shelling options, and descriptions of interesting information like the Christmas tree program to promote dune restoration. This place is the best of the best when it comes to a state park in my opinion - great amenities, perfectly maintained by friendly folks, and a beautiful location. What a beautiful asset that the State of Alabama has offered its residents and visitors - thank you for sharing it!

The park is beautiful and impeccably clean and well maintained. There is a lovely boardwalk across Lake Shelby and the marsh that offers views of so many different terrains all within the span of a couple of miles. There are picnic areas and playgrounds and trails and restaurants. There is so much to see here I will be making a return trip!

Do they have bike rentals at the park?
Kevin_from_MO

Yes, they have a bike share program that is free. I believe there are also a couple other rental/bike shops nearby. I used the free bike share and it was fine after I got through some technical issues connecting to the network.
We will be traveling in a 28’ class c motorhome this weekend. From what I understand the campsite isn’t exactly walking distance to the beach and we will not be towing our Tahoe. Is it possible to park the motorhome near the beach for a couple hours? And what about parking near a trail or two to walk the pups?

How convenient is beach access. Can you walk to the beach? What is the best area to stay?
Anazeteo
Hot Springs, AR1,301 contributions
The park gives passes to park free at the beach. Access is easy: drive and park, ride a bike and park or walk to beach. Beach Road is between park and beach but there is a traffic light and cross walk light to cross safely. 10 - 15 minute walk.
Can you check in before 4pm for RV campsites if you arrive early and you have prepaid /

I know it was a devastating hurricane. How bad has the park been affected by Hurricane Sally? Does anyone know if there are any trees left in the campground? Does anyone have recent pictures of the campground? Thanks.
