About
Gulf State Park's two miles of beaches greet you with plenty of white sun-kissed sand, surging surf, seagulls and sea shells, but there is more than sand and surf to sink your toes into. Inside Gulf State Park there is a brand new Gulf Front lodge and Conference Center, beach pavilion, National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World Cottages, tennis courts, camp sites, 28 miles of paved/enhance trails and a fishing pier that is 20-feet wide and extends 1,512 feet into the Gulf. This and much more make Gulf State Park the perfect in-state vacation or out-of-state adventure.

Wow! This Alabama State Park has it all and it's FREE to enter! Free bikes to use to ride the 28 miles of trails, hiking, visitor center, nature center, fishing, swimming, camping, a restaurant, etc.

We love to walk the 6-mile loop around Lake Shelby at Gulf Shores. We park at the picnic area across from the State Lodge and walk across the boardwalk. There is a Bald Eagle nest about 4 miles into the hike. The adventurous can extend the trek on the Alligator boardwalk (Lake Shelby Overlook) and the campgrounds and Bear Creek Trail.

We visited the beach at the pavilion at 7pm when the sun is not so hot. We like the State park as veterans can park free. They have a nice boardwalk leading to the beach. The beach is very nice and we just sat in our chairs and enjoyed watching the waves and the sky as the sun set. The only problem was part of the rinsing station was not working.

Although the pavilion and pier are being remodeled, we enjoyed the beach. Plenty of parking. The campground across the street is beautiful. Large sites and bath house clean. Walk or bike the trails is easy riding/walk. There is a nice bike share/rental near the pavilion. Bikes are said to be free, but the app to use it asked for way too much information for my comfort, so we didn't bike. We did walk 10 miles of the 28 miles of trails.

My husband and I rented e-bikes (first time) for $45/4 hours each. The paths are paved and about 10 feet across, with many board walk bridges along the way. Go early, 8 am, when they open because it gets hot fast, and a lot of the trail is in the sun. They give you a map, but the signs are pretty confusing. Better to use the big maps along the way. There are several bathrooms along the ride. We loved the e-bike experience, and talk to many people who were riding their own e bikes. Noticed that there are bike racks along the way, with free beach cruiser bikes to borrow to. Mostly by the camp ground.

The park has 26 miles of paved trails and free bike rentals through a ride sharing app. It has diverse habitats and lots of birds and alligators. I rode there two days in a row and it is much quieter and cooler in the morning. It gets very crowded in the afternoon during spring break.

So thankful that the Gulf State Park exists, because it shows what Gulf Shores and the area used to be before all of the condos inundated the area. The Gulf Shores State Park is a great place to relax, walk on the sugar white sand, and see the dunes. It is a natural gem and I thank the State of Alabama, and its park rangers for preserving this piece of Heaven for future generations to enjoy as the city sprawls around it and population booms.

This park is truly a wonderful place to stay. Large lots!!! Biking trails are top notch, short distance to the beach/ocean, activities in the park BUT as in every park the wifi is almost non-existent. This extremely frustrating if you need to work, stream or just read the news. Either offer a functional system or pull it out. But don't promote it as a benefit. Also, at least verizon, cell service is one bar. So you can't really use hot spots. Would be great if the park service would work with the cell carriers to put up a tower. 500+ campsites as well as state cabins/condos in such a compact area I would think would benefit everyone.

Clean, comfortable relaxing atmosphere. The staff is wonderful, friendly and welcoming. The rooms clean and comfy. The noise level is low. Beds are nice. The beach is Just outside the hotel doors. Nice porch with rockers available to enjoy the views. The price of the rooms, drinks, food is pricey for a state park!!!!

We rented ebikes and did all the trails one morning. Trails are great, well maintained and full of wildlife. We saw various birds, missed the eagles, and an alligator momma and next with babies. Many tails were completely shaded. This was our first ebike excursion and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommended

Gulf State Park is just more beautiful spot to add to the long list of amazing places to see in Gulf Shores, AL.  The pier is all new and twice as big since the last hurricane with a great bar/restaurant and a great place to enjoy the sights and sounds of the beautiful Gulf. There's an awesome campground with a ton of amenities, trails and more trails, bike trails, State park hotel resort by Hilton with amazing restaurant, beach front parking with boardwalk vendors and so much more.

I would check several other reviews as the Gulf State Park has much more to offer than I covered here.  The area is very well maintained and very scenic.  There is ample parking and lots of people for fishing off the pier or on the beach with their families and friends. There is tons of beach access for miles and miles.

The Gulf State Park Pavilion, for example, has terrific huge beach access. Love it, love it, love it!! We were on this beach when they ran us off @ 5pm a few weeks ago. We were here when for the re-open @ 5pm. Absolutely perfect beach day with 78° sunny day with nice northerly breeze, sweet!!! There's lots of parking and everyone is just happy to have our feet in the sand, wind in our faces & those waves. Ahhhh

This uncrowded, natural beach is six miles east of Highway 59 on Beach Pkwy, with beautiful crystaline sand dunes and sea oats. There's lots of room to spread out, making it a great place for families with lots of gear. Surf fishing is a popular activity here. The beach pavilion features air-conditioned restrooms, private showers, a snack bar, plenty of shady spots to sit and eat, and even a huge fireplace for chilly days. There is a $6 fee to park all day ($12 for large vans) (residents park free so do veterans just see Beach Pavilion attendant or pick up an annual pass at Park office headquarters) and there's plenty of spaces, and lots of room for large vehicles and RVs. There's also a BBQ joint seasonally :-)

The pavilion is also popular for weddings, reunions and other gatherings but you must call the Park HQ for rental information.

The hours are 7:00 a.m. to Sunset, 7 days a week

Bottom line; Gulf State Park's beautiful Beach Pavilion is a great place for you to enjoy a day at the beach! SWEET!

I think we were likely here at the wrong time of the year. We didn't see many birds at all (I think we saw 4?), but it wasn't peak migration time. We did see one alligator, but it was pretty chilly, so I think most of them were hunkered down. We learned that they don't eat when the temperature is less than 50 degrees, so that was a positive. My biggest complaint is that the signage and maps aren't the best. We really struggled to try to figure out how to get where we wanted to go. We left much sooner than we planned because of that and the dearth of wild life. It's probably much better when it's warmer and during peak bird migration times.

Did an eBike ride through part of the park. Rented the bikes at e-bike and board rental on Hwy 59 (just about 1.5 blocks south of Hwy 180, west side of the road). It was really a hot day...we're from the midwest and used to some shade on bike trails...don't expect that here. So be ready with wide brim hats and lots of water.

Overall the trip was great. Navigation was a challenge...Use your phone app. The map the place gave us was useless (the bikes and service were excellent, but the maps weren't) We looped around the big lake on the east to the south, sent over hwy 182 to a hotel bar for a refresher then back up the west side of the lake. Somewhat time crunched as we got a late start but that was maybe 1.5 hours to 2 hours. Could have been faster.

Park was pretty, can imagine a longer ride would have revealed even more.

My wife and I camp here yearly and this year we are back a second time. We come in May before the schools let out and in September when the children have gone back to school. The campground is less crowded and quieter. As for the park, it is well run by their staff. Easy check in upon arrival and even easier checkout. The park has 400+ campsites, from primitive camping to full hookups. The RV campsites are all paved and level with WES at each site. The sites are well groomed and spacious. Campers are not on top of each other. They have a large pool, tennis courts, hiking/biking trails and a lake to fish in. Laundromat on ground and bath houses spaced out well for all campers. The fees are very reasonable. We greatly enjoy our time here,

Wow! Tons of fun. The bike/walking trails go on and on. We didn’t even ride but maybe half the trails and ended up going almost 15 miles. There were tons of nature things to see like Shelby Lakes, look off piers and ride bikes over Lake Crossing and a few little hidden playground type places for kids. The weather for us was wonderful being overcast with a constant breeze so we never got sweaty. One cool surprise was seeing two alligators! They offer Segway tours we passed by on one trail. The trails are paved nicely and fairly flat except for a few. Overall, this is a wonderful place for anyone to explore.

Gulf Shores/Orange Beach was a fun family getaway. The beach was in great shape and the water was refreshing. I am not a beach person but it was enjoyable.

I enjoyed a 12+ mile bike ride at the Gulf State Park Trail system though the bike share could use some work. I wasn’t able to use the app to reserve a bike. Thankfully a park worker/rep pulled up and was able to help me out.

Traffic was busy at times in the main road but overall not bad. I wish the cell service as better overall. Trying to find a restaurant or directions (or reserve the bike share) at times was frustrating as my phone wouldn’t connect. (AT&T service)

The park is an absolute gem. We visited several times during our stay nearby. We rented the bikes on 2 occasions. The bikes are staged outside in a few locations within the park. The bikes are free for the first 2 hours, then only a few dollars an hour after that. It’s a bit of a process the first time you rent them, as you must download an app, and put a credit card on file.(it’s a slick system and definitely worth doing)
So many trails for walking and biking, and it’s a large gorgeous park. It’s an absolute must if you enjoy being outdoors

Trails are amazing. We hiked to the bald eagle 🦅 nests, but unfortunately they weren’t home. Saw an alligator. There is a wonderful little restaurant with both in and outdoor seating. The food is delicious. Live music starts around 4:00. Ping pong tables. Dog friendly. Happy hour every day. Love this state park!!

At Gulf State Park, there are 496 RV sites with paved pads, water, sewer, and power all available. At this same park, there are eight "primitive" sites which is an accurate description although the fee charged plus all the add ons was not "primitive".

Major complaint is that water was about a football field away.
Also no level tent pads provided although 500 paved pads had been provided for RV campers. The railroad times that contain the driveway are rotten. (I saw no other rotten ties anywhere else in the park.)

The park itself is great with miles of paved bike paths which for us was the main reason for coming. Plus the staff of naturalists who interpret the habitats of the park.

It’s tough to criticize a free, lovely park in Gulf Shores, but I will. We reserved a Pier tour. We showed up at 8:45 for the 9 AM tour. Waited til after 9, no State Park guide? No text. No phone call. Checked email on cell and sure enough the guide emailed us while we were driving to the Pier saying she wasn’t going to show up to the Pier because ‘more snow needs to be removed’. Not professional IMO to strand a scheduled tour group of 4 at the tour start location in that fashion.
