Elberta isn't on the way to many places but if you end up between Pensacola, FL and Gulf Shores, AL and don't mind driving another 20 miles, this is the best cheese you can buy. It's a very small operation, only open Fridays and Saturdays from 9-5 for most of the year. Around Thanksgiving and Christmas they are open 2 additional days. Expect to pay $10-$16 a pound and it's worth it. You can sample any of the cheeses (although it will only make your decisions harder). The shop also sells crackers, olives, homemade bread, honey, etc.

Sadly, Sweet Home Farm is now closed to the public. A sign on their gate says “retired”. They are continuing to wholesale, so you will continue to see their products featured on certain restaurant menus. I’m not sure if any grocers are carrying their products.

Saw a brochure and planned a special trip to be there when they opened on a Friday morning. Followed the directions and ended up down a dead-end road with a big dually truck... managed to turn around and then as we passed a very eerie looking driveway, we realized that was the place! There was absolutely no way we could drive our truck in this driveway - it was overgrown with shrubs/trees and we couldn't see anything... not sure if attack dogs or anything else was lurking around so we high-tailed it out of there. It may be a nice place, but they need signage and they need to clear their driveway a bit so people can see what's there. Might be a nice place, but it was a very disappointing and a wasted trip for us.

The trip to this family cheese farm is a rewarding opportunity to see a small dairy farm up close. The owners have been making and selling their wonderful cheeses for many years now, and visiting their farm is a highlight of our visits to the Gulf Shores beach. I have never been disappointed with our choices, and the recipients of my cheese and cheese fudge gifts have loved them, too. Take a break from the beach, or go on a rainy day. Check their website for their schedule before you go, as they open their shop a limited number of days each week.

Simply the best place to buy amazing cheeses, fig preserves, farm fresh eggs and other local goodies. They are only open Fridays and Saturdays, and sometimes they take a vacation so I recommend always calling first to make sure they are open (251-986-5663).
This is, as the owners themselves will tell you with pride, a small "mom and pop" operation crafting artisan raw milk cheeses. All of the cheeses that they sell are made from the milk from their herd of Guernsey cows. That means that they just might be out of a particular cheese on a given day, but there is always something interesting to try. The owners provide samples of any cheese you'd like to taste. Once you decide on something (or in our case many somethings) they will vacuum wrap it for you. This is ideal if you plan on traveling a long way with your cheese (like the 12 hours it takes us to get back to Indiana), or if you aren't planning on eating it right away (they don't use any preservatives in their cheeses).
Note: The store is quite small so it can get crowded. Also, this is a working farm not a petting zoo, so don't expect to do much more than gaze at the cows in the distance or watch the chickens in their very cute pen.
The cheeses are truly unique and all of our friends who have been here, send us with orders to bring home to them whenever we are headed this way. Our favorites are the Montabella, the Bayside Blue, Perdido (a signature cheese that has a layer of herb ash imparting a slightly smokey flavor) and the most amazing one of all -- Cheese Fudge. Words just don't describe this last one sufficiently - you have to go there yourself to try it.

I've been to Sweet Home Farm a few times and each time the owners/staff have been very nice and helpful. This is not a large "store" very quaint. It isn't on a main road, it's off the beaten path but I do highly recommend you trying this place. And yes it get's crowded inside but it's so worth it. The samples are great! The one thing you have to know is, it's cash or check no credit or debit cards. But, there's an ATM 1 mile down the road in each direction - ask me how I know!!

My friend took me to the Sweet Home Farm today as part of my birthday celebration.
She told me she had wanted to visit this place for years, and now that she is retired, the time seemed right. This is a working farm with the cows out in the field making the wonderful milk that ends up as unbelievably delicious cheese.
We were greeted by Alyce who let us try whichever cheeses we wanted to try, and there were lots of cheeses from which to pick. They were all delicious. I bought the garlic blue cheese, the Cajun spice cheese ( for the grits ), and a cheese called Montabella which is delicious with salami and crackers. There was also a nice selection of jellies and dried fruits and nuts available. From start to finish this was a delightful experience. I took out my credit card and was prepared to pay with it only to find out ( understandably ) that they take cash and checks only. Luckily I had enough to pay for my generous splurge for my birthday. If you like cheese, you NEED to visit Sweet Home Cheese.
The trip there is down a very nice road "out in the country", not terribly far from Pensacola, Florida. I can't wait to go back again. This cheese is very special.
