About
Located on the southernmost tip of the Appalachian mountain chain, Cheaha is the oldest state park in Alabama. Imagine 2,799 acres of quartzite boulders and ancient wind-warped trees at 2,407 feet above sea level, often above the clouds, surrounded by 392,567 acres of the Talladega National Forest including 7,245 acres of wilderness. Quiet surroundings, a cliffside restaurant, a variety of overnight accommodations, the highest pool in Alabama, a dog park, museums, hiking trails, a six acre lake, and a historic timber framed group lodge that can be rented for weddings, family reunions, or business retreats. Cheaha State Park seems far removed from civilization; however, this park is only 30 minutes away from several historic downtown areas. Discover breathtaking views, surreal sunsets, waterfalls, and diverse recreational activities. Access: The park recommends traveling on the Talladega Scenic Drive (Alabama Highway 281) which is well maintained, wide and appropriate for large RVs.

- tiltedaxisJacksonville, Florida372 contributionsGreat hiking!Great day trip! I thought it was a bit pricey since the cost of admission was per person instead of per vehicle. One boardwalk trail was also closed. The other trails were great, though, and we had some really good views. We ordered takeout from the restaurant and were impressed by the quality (a lot of state and national parks are lacking in the quality of food, but our burgers and fries here were great). We brought our dog with us, and she loved hiking the trails. We'll be back one day when in the area again. We are so happy that you enjoyed your visit. We absolutely love our guests and their dogs! The support you provided through your park admission fee keeps our park open...every dime spent at Cheaha stays at Cheaha to keep the trails open and improvements flowing. We strive to be very good stewards of your investment in us. We hope you will visit often...and make sure you take your doggie to the Mike Bosarge Memorial Dog Park. See you soon! - Tyler AllenMontgomery, Alabama2 contributionsA great day trip and even weekend getaway!Give yourself an entire day to adequately explore the park and surrounding area. The views from Bald Rock and Pulpit Rock are striking and a must-do. Each one only requires a small amount of walking/hiking to get to. The photo opportunities will be WELL worth your time. The trails and hiking are all phenomenal with plenty of great views. Cheaha Lake, High Falls Trail and Adams' Gap Trail are also musts. The fall time is simply stunning with the array of foliage, but any time of the year will offer great views. There may be a healthy amount people there on good weather days, so keep that in mind. However, I have yet to run into any issues with overcrowding. You may just have to wait a few for that perfect photo opportunity at Bald Rock and Pulpit Rock. For the $5 per person entry fee, it is MORE than worthwhile.Thank you so much for this wonderful review. Our team loves our park and we love our guests. The places you mention are some of our favorite locations. All guests who visit Cheaha receive a park map and we have topo maps of the park and surrounding Talladega National Forest for reference. Our team is always glad to answer questions and provide more information. Hope to see you again soon and often! - Tzivia R68 contributionsGreat park, we were there on a bad dayWe came here on a day trip from Atlanta as we wanted to experience some of Alabama. We were jonesing for a great hike and found this place thinking it fit the bill. First of all, it was a long windy road to get up here, great views even from the road. The reviews are contradictory, some saying the paths on the hikes were clearly marked and others saying it wasn't so we weren't sure what to do. We paid in the store at the entrance ($5 per person) and the kind woman in there gave me a map with some markings to show us where we wanted to go. We wanted to go to the highest point in Alabama, we were hoping to hike up there but really it's just a road, and it was foggy so we didn't want to walk on a road in the fog (for safety reasons) So we drove up there and ate lunch at the covered benchs (seeing the Bigfoot - leave no trace initiative). We saw indications of a hiking trail leaving from there... but no clear signs on that one and it wasn't on the map, given the fog we didn't want to chance getting lost in an unknown area. We climbed the stairs in the observation tower to see the view from the top, but like a joke it got so foggy we couldn't see a thing, it was all white, like we were in a thick cloud. Anyway from there we drove to the first "hike" which was really a boardwalk, to Bald Rock. It was a quick easy walk, we went off the Boardwalk for a bit to walk in the woods, but it was all wet and muddy so we went back on. The fog had cleared by then and the view from the end was incredible!!! We then went back to the car to go to the wildflower garden. The problem was the trail wasn't clearly marked, the road is one way only and we missed the parking lot, by the time we realized we were by the cabins and the parking there was for cabins only, so we missed the chance, we also couldn't figure out where to park to get onto the rock garden or lake trail that we had planned on hiking. At that point we were tired and nauseus from the altitude and the driving up the mountains, we figured we'd cut our losses and we left. Anyway bottom line is this is a great park, we just happened upon it on a bad day. Also the signage for the parking and trails could be clearer.Thank you so much for your kind review especially since you visited the park on a day when the clouds were sitting on the mountain. At our altitude, when it appears "foggy" it is really cloud cover (which is kind of cool except it blocks the view). We hope you will come back in the spring, summer or fall...each season is gorgeous. We have a very special trail map with trails in color that we sell in the store for $2 that will assist with trail identification. Most of our trails don't have an actual trailhead...they connect our village of facilities and special areas of interest to encourage pedestrians and less vehicles. I will share you concerns with our Park's Naturalist so that she can attempt to make the area a little more user friendly. Next time you visit, make sure you hike to Pulpit Rock. It is the best view for sunsets! Better yet...reserve a cabin (cabins 1 and 2 have best views) and make a weekend of it. We'd love to have you back for another chance to show you the park on an uncloudy day! - gabulldawg87Niceville, Florida13 contributionsGreat find in AL , Mountain get awayLooking for great mountain get away closer to FL we found the highest point in AL, Cheaha State park. Only a lttle over 2000 ft above sea level, it gives you a true mountain feeling. Stayed in the historic museum csbin, very quaint for a couple. Outdoor fire pit and grill for cooking. Great trails, mountain side swimming pool (nice cold mountain water), adjacent part of part has a lake with beach and floating dock in middle. Fun, peaceful get away. Cabins are super clean, they also have hotel and camping on site. Best cabin view is #1, right on cliff side. A must to take the kiddos or for a couples private weekend. Also socked they had a wheel chair accessible trail boardwalk that takes you right out to Bald Rock, for spectacular sunset views. We are so glad you enjoyed your visit. Hope to see you again- every season is amazing on the highest mountain in Alabama.Written August 12, 2020This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten July 3, 2020
- Kerry DJackson, Alabama209 contributionsAmazing visit! My family booked a campsite in the upper campground for November. We lucked out & arrived at peak leaf change! My husband, myself & our 4-year-old had some great hikes in the Talladega National Forest. Hurricane Zeta had come through only a week before so some trails were blocked, but we thought the staff had done an excellent job clearing trails with the short time they had. Naturally we hiked to Pulpit Rock, but we loved the Mountain Laurel Trail. The view was astonishing. The High Falls Trail is very short & easy with a wonderful payoff at the end. The Cheaha Falls were beautiful & it was a nice hike. We had an amazing week at Cheaha State Park...it is a beautiful gem!Thank you so much for visiting Cheaha and for taking time to review us. - Patricia KargBirmingham, Alabama5 contributionsPeaceful get away!We stayed in one of the bluffside cabins(#4) recently. It was such a beautiful and peaceful setting for us to celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary! We immediately noticed how quiet it was when we got out of our car. The views were amazing! We could see the sunset through the trees, and a night sky full of stars. There is a nice short gravel path around to the front door. There are four stone steps down to the path. There are solar lights to light your way to the gravel patio, complete with a fire pit which we filled with firewood from the park store, wrought iron round table and two chairs. There is also a charcoal grill, all overlooking the mountains! Inside there is a queen-size bed, two side chairs, a bedside table, chest of drawers, lamp, ceiling fan, gas log fireplace, Roku LCD TV with Direct TV. There are full-size appliances; a refrigerator with ice maker, stove, oven, microwave, full size coffee maker (bring your own coffee and filters), a one-cup coffee maker(coffee+filter, sugar and creamer packets are provided), a sink with dish washing liquid, paper towels, and dishes, utensils, pots and pans. There is no dishwasher. There is ample cabinet storage with a dorm size ironing board and iron. The bathroom is small with a toilet, bathtub/shower combo, and a sink. Shampoo, conditioner, and soap are provided. There is also a hair dryer. The furniture is a beautiful rustic wood, the authentic stone walls are beautiful, and the ceramic tile floor was clean and cool. It reminds me of a fairytale house nestled in the mountains! The cabin was clean, and the bed was comfortable with four fluffy pillows. We did have a problem with our air conditioning unit, but the ladies at the store sent maintenance immediately to check it out. The park store has many staples and snacks, postcards, souvenirs, even some old fashion stick candy! There are many trails, and even an accessible wooden pathway to Bald Rock. We saw many bluebirds! We didn't try the restaurant, as we brought our own food and cooked on the grill at our cabin every night. There is a pool beside the restaurant. The park staff are very accommodating, and we enjoyed our little get away! We will be back, thank you Cheaha! This review made our day! Thank you for loving Cheaha State Park- hope to see you again soon. We appreciate your support and kindness.Written August 12, 2020This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2020Written July 25, 2020
- Smiles4milesTallahassee, Florida1,111 contributionsPretty but CrowdedCheaha is a lovely compact park on the summit of Cheaha Mountain. The compact area itself offers pluses and minuses. The negative: because the park is designed around a relatively small loop road it can be very congested and in our experience many of the visitors were not interested in nature but seemed to be much more interested in drinking and yelling, and gunning their motors. As a result what should have been a serene experience was frequently not. The positives: the views and foliage were really lovely, especially the mountain laurel. The Bald Rock Trail offered a boardwalk with dirt trails on either side. Due to accessibility this was very crowded but a great opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to experience the final vantage point. We tried other trails but since they were bumper to bumper witj weekend warriors we made quick work of them. Finally we found the Mountain Laurel trail which was not busy, in fact, it seemed to be undiscovered and we found ourselves alone in a beautiful and peaceful environment. The trail follows a small stream and ends with a lovely overlook. Relatively easy trail with a nice payoff. Small reasonable entrance fee into the park, restrooms and pretty hikes make this a possibility for a quick day hike or two.We are sorry that you had a crowded experience. Usually Cheaha State Park is very serene and peaceful. There are almost 3,000 acres to spread out and enjoy. The loop road is only a small portion of the park. It goes through the "village" area where the hotel, cabins, chalets, campgrounds, and other day use areas are located. There is also Lake Cheaha which is 2 miles from the top but lovely and has an incredible view of the mountain. We are glad you found the Mountain Laurel Trail. It is a hidden gem and goes out to Angel Falls overlook. If you visit again, please make sure you visit Pulpit Rock Trail and perhaps McDill Trail when you return. The cabins also offer an enchanting experience in solitude. The bluff side cabins have their own private overlooks. Thank you for loving Cheaha and supporting your parks.Written October 12, 2021This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2021Traveled as a coupleWritten September 12, 2021
- OrlandoSpan2Deltona, Florida33 contributionsCheaha CabinsWe visited over Thanksgiving break and stayed in Cabin 16. We were pleasantly surprised with the amenities within the cabin: an electric fireplace, four sets of dishes, soap, sponge, paper towels, microwave, a coffee maker, and a nice sized fridge. Four adults and we didn't feel particularly cramped. Two of us slept on cots by the fireplace. Awesome place to explore. We did a number of hikes during our stay and really loved that a hike with an amazing view was a short hike from our back door!Thank you for visiting Cheaha and supporting our park. - Cheryl B2 contributionsOctober stayWe love the views at Cheaha, and always stay in one of the Chalets. This time our stay was just as wonderful!!! We saw a doe and her fawn on two different occasins, once while taking a walk around the small area of the chalets and once when we went up to the store to purchase some wood. A tad disappointted that the Vista Restaurant was not opened during the week, so we ended up going into to Oxford for dinner one night and purchased groceries from Publix. Contemplating staying in one of the bluff cabins on our next visit.Reading this review made us so happy- thank you for loving Cheaha! We have a grand diversity of wildlife and our guests love the cabins and chalets. The Vista Cliffside Restaurant is only closed on Tues & Weds...it is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from noon to 8 pm. In December to February we will be closed Tues, Weds & Thursday and open Friday through Monday from 11 am to 7 pm. You would absolutely love the bluff cabins. They are little story book cottages. We started in Florence/Muscle Shoals visiting amazing landmarks: 70's famous recording studios, W,C. Handy's Museum includingbthe log cabin where he was born and an elaborate Native Indian Museum located next to an Indian Burial Mound. On our return home we traveled by way of Cheaha State Park. Beautiful foothills covered with a variety of trees which I'm sure look glorious in their Fall foliage.Thank you so much for your visit and your review. We love our guests and our park. It is beautiful in every season. Right now the dogwoods are in bloom throughout the spring green forests. Soon our mountain laurels will blossom and make the creeks and streams look like wedding blowers. Wildflowers and butterflies are abundant. Please visit us again soon. My husband and I spend about 5 days with our RV at Cheaha State Park. The staff was very nice and the park very clean and quite.
We hiked a few very scenic trails and others plain but just as beautiful. The weather was very nice and they had no bugs.
I give 4 stars instead of 5 because some of the RV slots are very tight and close to the road. We had one just like that but the staff was able to switch us to a different one. So chose carefully when you book especially if you have a big rig. But overall I would highly recommend this campground!

We stayed in one of the bluffside stone cabins built by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Cors) during the depression. Beautifull cabin with outstanding views. Rustic but comfortable with all modern amenities including gas fireplace, heat, AC, full kitchen, full bath, etc. Small...perfect for 2 but no more. We had cabin #1 which had 34 steps down from parking area so not ADA accessible.
We went for hiking and were not disappointed. Several good trails in park. Both the Lake trail and the Laurel trail started right by our cabin. The lake trail is very steep and difficult (who knew Alabama had mountains?) but worth the trip down to the small park lake and nature center. Several other trails also go through the park and one leads to a stone tower atop Mount Cheaha, the highest point in Alabama.
The lodge restaurant is currently closed due to staffing shortages and there are no nearby stores so pack enough food for your stay. The park store sells beer, wine,(but not on Sunday) ice cream, Cheetos and souvenirs and not much else.
Lake Chinnabee in the Talladega national forest is only a few miles away and worth the visit for the Chinnabee Silent trail built by a troop of deaf boy scouts (hence the name). This trail may not be possible after rain because you do have to do a stream crossing that may be difficult in high water conditions.

Nice campground and good hiking. Quiet and clean. We have found the Alabama parks to be very nice, well kept with big spacious campsites. You can walk from campground to trails and over looks. Many sites have full hookups.

We stayed at the lodge two nights to highpoint and explore the park. The park is extremely welcoming with well marked trails and something to offer for all fitness levels. I was pleasantly surprised that the observation tower was open during the week off-season so we were able to see the X and climb to the top. The view from the lodge deck and Bald Rock of the Taladega National Forest below were pretty. The road to the top of Cheaha Mt. is very well maintained, which was a relief. I would recommend this State park for an enjoyable day of exploring.

Great, quiet park. Be aware there are three sizes of sites. Even though it is a pull thru on the map, it may not accommodate a big rig. The park rangers are very accommodating should you need to change sites. 👍🏻 First state park we've stayed in with a dog park. Lots of history and hiking in the area.

We paid $5 per person to enter the park. We did two short trails, the Doug Ghee Boardwalk & Pulpit Rock. Both were very nice with beautiful views & had amazing rocks. They were both .6 mile each.
We felt the price was a bit steep for doing 2 short trails although they have a few other trails that we were not interested in doing.
The rental cabins looked nice & there was a lodge and an event center with a pool for those camping there.
There are restrooms in the gift shop at the entrance.

The highest point in Alabama. Nice trails easy and hard. Rooms in the lodge getting old and especially on the outside need painting and maintenance in general. Unfortunately the restaurant is closed due to lack of help. Prices in the country store are sky high. 1/4 normal box of soda crackers $4!!!

Hi there, has anyone stayed in the chalets recently? My brother and I plan to visit Cheaha in August. We considered the cabins, but the reviews are not great. The Lodge looks really dated. Any suggestions would be helpful We would like 2 bedrooms and comfortable seating area and definitely coffee pot in the mornings. Thanks so much

Do you have to pay for a day pass ($5/person) just to walk on a hiking trail?
reneeraney
Delta, AL22 contributions
Thanks to Alabama's Amendment 2, every dollar you spend in the park stays in the park for upkeep and improvements. So the parks do require a $5 gate fee for all guests who plan to enjoy the park. If the trails are located outside of the park boundaries (no gate/fee entrance) then there is no fee. However, your donations are much appreciated.
