It was a very nice place when I was growing up, I went almost every day and then the bridge got destroyed by hurricane Fredrick and we the people paid for the bridge to be rebuilt and now they want to charge an arm and a leg just to go to what you would think would be a public beach.
This absolutely sucks in a very big way.
If the bridge is ever destroyed again I do what ever I can to make sure that the island government has to pay the bills.

Although the beaches of Dauphin Island are pet friendly most restaurants are not!! We were there on a Monday in august. Some restaurants were closed however after a long day at the beach we could NOT find a pet friend restaurant and left via the ferry very hungry. Couldn’t leave the dog in the car as the weather was 90 degrees

I drove over from Baton Rouge just to take my dog to the beach. A Google search indicated dogs were allowed on at least 2 of the beaches there, so for that purpose Dauphin island was ok. FYI, from what I read dogs are not allowed on the West end beach.

I saw a cool Fort on the island but it was closed. There is also an aquarium.
Aside from that, I saw absolutely zero appeal, and never need to return.
The sand on the beach wasn't bad, but it also was not the fine sugary white sand of Destin. The water I saw and got into was murky brown. I was hoping for some blue/green clear water, but no. I will admit I did not get a good look at the water on the gulf side so maybe it's nicer there? But other reviews also state the water isn't great on Dauphin island.

I was there on a Monday and it seemed a lot was closed, and what was open, closed relatively early. If you just want to be surrounded by water, then maybe dolphin island would suit you fine. But for those who want beautiful white sand and blue green water this is 100% not the place.

There is also not a whole lot to do on the island and not a lot of stores and shops if you need food and supplies.

No need to ever return from my perspective.

We have visited the Al gulf coast numbers of times but usually stay on fort Morgan. I found DI to be the most inhospitable place to stay. There are no convenient stores within 30 miles. The house we rented needed a lot of work but was liveable. The people weren’t friendly and restaurants that advertised pet friendly were not.
Will not visit here again

We are staying in Gulfport Mississippi for the winter, great beaches but lack seashells so we decided to check out Delphine Island yesterday 3/7/23 . It was a nice drive to the Island on country roads. If you go be sure to have enough gas as the closest gas station is charging .90 cents more than the other stations at this writing. The beach was ok, if your looking for shells , clam shells are plentyful but that was all we saw. There is a port-a-potty in the parking lot however upon opening the door it appears to have not been serviced since last year.I will not go into gross details however I did open the door upon our arrival and all i can say is NO, DONT DO IT! Hope this review helps other people. We will not be retuning.

Never in my life have I spent $2k for a horribly polluted beach vacation. Seeing trash of all kinds littered across every inch of this beach was a huge let down. Watching people fish and keep beautiful sea life out of the water for hours for a photo-op was a nightmare. People catching crabs and leaving them in buckets in hot patios was terrible. Seeing a beautiful wild heron with a foot completely incapacitated and twisted in fishing line was beyond sad. It could barely walk and will likely die. We were able to get within a foot of it trying to help before it attempted to fly away because its foot was so badly wrapped it couldn’t get any lift. Whether it’s tourists or locals this place is a complete garbage heap. There needs to be serious clean-up or enforcement of littering. Such a sad way to see another beautiful part of our ocean looking like a local landfill and no one doing their part to leave no trace. I don’t know if I would ever visit again. Happy to say that the Carolina Coast does so much to keep our beaches and oceans clean. Sad sad sad.

Dauphin Island is cold in the winter & hellishly hot amd humid in summer. It rains a LOT. That quiet about the place is probably because of the weather and a succession of hurricanes. This is NOT a party beach. It's a protected bird sanctuary and Sea Lab campus. That is why some people love ut...

East end public beach was muddy and murky. We didn't even want to go in the water. The West end public beach was much better. Still not clear water, but better than east end. We recommend riding the Ferry to Gulf Shores and visiting the beaches over there off Hwy 59 for perfect beaches and swimming water.

We always go to other side of the gulf, gulf shore, Destin,Pensacola, but lately we are finding it to be crowded and tooo touristy traffic is awful. We have been to Dauphin island before prolly like 8 years ago. I love the place but since it’s an island it is not a hopping place. But during the pandemic it’s a place to be. We rented a house on the beach we just chilled as a family rode our bikes.kayaks, paddle board. It’s not a crowded beach. We luv the place we went to public beach got some shells. We saw dolphins everyday on our kayak .soo close that my son hear them breathe. We had a great time. It’s a little bit more developed than it was but still had a quite serenity to it. You wanna beat the crowds this is it.

Spent a whole afternoon walking around and taking pictures, if you walk close to the water you'll find shells, but if you walk closer to the back of the beach (which is really wide), you'll see all the birds in the marsh area. The sand is super white and soft. Plenty of space to spread out and keep to yourselves. A little bit of a walk to get back to the beach from the parking lot.
