After several tips to the island, we finally made a point to visit the sanctuary. We should've done this sooner! It's a great place to wind down, take a stroll, and enjoy the sights/sounds of nature. Easy trails take you around a small lake (say hey to the alligators) and out to the beach (beautiful views and benches). Parking can be complicated, but it's not terrible. A free, family-friendly, accessible activity you should definitely put on your list!

My fiancé and I walked all the trails here and hung around by Gaillard Lake in a few locations.. all very pretty and not crowded. August though, so it was crazy hot and the mosquitos were awful in some parts that had standing rain water! Highlights were seeing an ~6 foot alligator in the lake, a pair of ospreys fishing and feeding their young, and this one really giant magnolia! We were also super pleased to find the pathway out to the beach (shhhhh I think it's a secret lol), and spent an evening out there.
Note- there's not a lot of parking so either go early morning, late afternoon, or bike to it (there are a couple bike racks available).
Most people were walking the trails; we only passed one group with bikes.

This is a great nature area with clearly defined walking paths, an accurate map. and plenty of places to sit down and enjoy the views. In the summer, you definitely want to go in the mornings before it gets too hot.

We had looked forward to seeing many birds here, but only saw a few egrets near the beach. There are numerous trails to a lake and the beach that aren't very well marked. Be sure to pick up a map at the parking lot. Parking is very limited.

While we only spent about 30 minutes walking around, and we didn’t see any wildlife (we were really wanting to see the gators!), it’s worth the stop if you love nature or hiking. It was a few days after New Year’s when we went, so it may have not been a good time of year for birds, gators, etc., as it was only about 50 degrees.

Depending on the time of year, you will see different native birds and migratory birds. The spring migration runs from mid-March through early May. The autumn migration runs from mid-September through late October.
My friend and I visited during early March, when the waterfowl were active. So we took the short hike to Gaillard Lake. There is a nice deck there where you can peacefully watch the turtles, snowy egrets, ducks, and geese. Near the deck was a tree, which was home to a nesting Great Blue Heron. Magnificent!

After reviewing this place for the first time two years ago, I decided to make an effort to bring my husband to Dauphin Island just so I could show him this place. We had planned to spend some time on the beach, so we brought beach chairs and a small cooler. I think the elevated walkway to the beach area is an addition since my first visit...what a treat!

The landscape of the numerous trails is gorgeous. We visited during a cold day so, of course, didn't expect to see much wildlife. That didn't matter much as I'm a plant nerd as well. It was really cool to see such a beautiful environment. I definitely plan to return during the spring!

There are about four miles of trails here if you feel like walking them all. Most of the trails are rustic with dirt and sand surfaces. They need better signage since we went the wrong direction several times. Bugs are bad so bring bug repellent. We did get to see an alligator swimming in their pond.

We walked the trails a couple of times looking for birds. It's nature and you just need know. We did not have much luck, but we know people who did. The parking lot is very small, so early is likely your best bet. Nice walking trails though - plenty of room. ( Really - more like a road that I suspect is driven on at times)
