If you like history and architecture this is the right place for you. The old buildings, churches and monuments are everywhere and you can enter some of them and even count with some guides explaining it's history.

Coming from Recife with taxi. It lasted 50 minutes and charged 50 BRL. Taxi from the airport to Boa Viagem took less than 10 minutes and was 40 BRL !! - ugly ! was my first feeling of Olinda - buildings and churches had no...More

The historic district is a nice place for a stroll. There are many lookout spots for great views. I think all you need here is a couple of hours.

We spent about two hours in Olinda and wish we had more time to spend there. It was just as Carnival was preparing to start so the stores and streets were decorated which made this colorful little area even more fun. Olinda sits on top...More

This was a refreshing upgrade from downtown Recife, which we found unappealing. Take a 10 minute taxi up to this hill town and wander down the quaint streets and artsy shops. We spent about two hours here and enjoyed the visit. Carnival was happening and...More

You may wonder why there are so many different colors of house here? That's because it wasn't introduced house number in the past. Different color can identify exact house. Enjoy all central histrionic street views in Olinda.

Many tiny streets, brightly painted houses and buildings, faded glory of churches. I suggest that you go with a guide to learn more and not get lost!

There are a lot of churches - some are open in the morning for visits, some are closed the whole day. Unfortunately the majority of the churches are in a bad shape - are in need of major renovations

I will be arriving in Recife by cruise ship. Is it possible to hire a guide/taxi at the cruise pier to take us into Olinda? Are there any good tourist sights or shopping within walking distance of the cruise pier?

There is almost nothing within walking distance. You may hire a taxi + guide for less than $100 for an entire day. You'll need 6-8 hours for Recife+Olinda. You may want to arange this ahead of time (ask for references).
