This has in reality become a relic. A very old standalone movie theater, which we used to frequent for good Hollywood flicks, when we were in college in the late 90s.

Worn out and shabby with posters on all its walls, now it is desperately trying to remain afloat mainly by adding eateries of different types

One can avoid,if on a sightseeing tour of Kolkata.
Is located beside another old movie hall called LIGHTHOUSE,which has transformed over the ages into a garment shop

This is the place where every teenagers of the nineties were must have shown his face . Back to 35 years , the Esplanade area was not at all like it nowadays . not so much over crowded .
There were only single screen movie halls . The idea of the Multiplexes does not exists at that time .
At that point of time the were so many cinema halls in this particular area of the city . Lighthouse , New Empire Globe , Tiger , Elite , Paradise , Orient are some of them . At that time if anybody are keen to see the best of the Hollywood movies , New Empire caters all of them .
You don't believe the ticket prices at that time , Its Rs. 2 INR in pre -nineties era .
Hundred of young stars and other people are locked themselves inside a tunnel like pavement made of iron to grab a ticket at that price and they have to pass through a hundred stairs to find themselves in the top floor of the New Empire Cinema hall , wooden chairs filled up with viewers .
Their excitement touches the roof as soon as the movie starts.
All the greatest movies of all time were released in this hall . I have seen almost hundred movies there .
Those were the days .which will never return .
Of course there were normal tickets as well .But there was always a demand for those wooden chair tickets .
Maybe the price of the ticket and the ease of smoking may be one great causes of that rush .
This facility is not available right now in New Empire Cinema Hall .

It remains as a landmark of kolkata, one of the oldest.
Very cheap ticket price if you want to enjoy a movie with a little pinch in pocket, surrounded by restaurants.

will surely suggest to try this one.

This used to a fine cinema house in central kolkata, but with passing time and the management being so incompetent that the hall has lost it's grandeur and is merely standing as an old building now.

This single screen theatre hall is almost 80 years old with beautiful interiors. The hall is located centrally at Dharmatala. Many other nearby cinema halls (Chaplin, Light House, Metro Cinema, etc.) are closed but New Empire, one of the oldest theatre hall is still running. Snacks are served inside.

Have your lunch/dinner after watching the movie, if you feel hungry. You will find some delicious restaurant (KFC, Dominnos, Wow Momos, etc.) just outside the movie hall. Do shopping road side or visit iconic New Market or Shreeram Arcade just adjacent to this hall.

New Empire Cinema has undergone numerous changes from changing from reel and projector based theater hall to digital mode with advanced Dolby Digital Sound system installation to the Gamming Zone Adding up and various big brands eateries adding Up.However New Empire Still holds the Charm and the nostalgia of My College days.THe Staffs are friendly and still in presence of so many Movie Theatrs ,inox and PVR s Coming Up New Empire Still transports one to the classy era of Britsh time and a time when watching Movies specially the English version was considered the most Hip thing.....recent visit flooded my memories with all those Movies and time spent there...
A charm in itself.

Has some nice outlets to eat out that supplement the movie hall experience. The place carries a legacy of being the place to watch movies and then eat out before the multiplex invasion. This place has improved but still cannot match up entirely to the multiplex experience. Still, good enough for a one time visit.
