Raj Heritage Walk

This is a Story Walk & one of our most popular tours, certified by so many travelers through the years! If you like listening to stories about the Raj days and Kolkata then this is your tour! It is a very interesting story of how the British started trading in this part of the world rivalling earlier European entrants. Many a booming cannon later, they became the leading traders. What followed was a small fort, a big port, a great battle, many changing fortunes and lots of colonial cunning & politics. The East India Company & later the Flag of the Empire gave a lot of importance to Calcutta for its trading, political and administrative clout. She was after all the Capital of British India for a long time & arguably the second most important city in the Empire. Along with Defense & Administration came institutions for Entertainment, Education & Emancipation. The light of European renaissance came as an ambient source & later cascaded into its own indigenous, self generating brightness.

Headline: Go to Kolkata and have a tour with Kaushik! What an amazing city, and what a great introduction to it through this walking tour. I have family links to Kolkata, but didn't really know a lot about it until now. Going on this tour was a perfect way to start to learn about this fascinating place, and left me hungry for more. It's a very early start, but that way you get to wander round the city at a (relatively) tranquil time and see it starting to wake up. Kaushik is an engaging guide. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the city and it is good to have the chance hear and understand the Indian / Bengali take on the Raj and the British in India, rather than what we might get at home. You learn a lot more wandering round the streets with him for a few hours than you could ever do from a guide book. I hope to go back again at some point and, if I do, I would not hesitate to get back in touch for another tour.

KC (Kaushik Chatterjee) was an exceptional guide as he shared Kolkata with our family. Our day started at the flower market followed by chai tea along the Ganges river, a tour through areas of theater, music, arts, and academics all while learning about the fascinating history and culture of the Kolkata and India. KC was always attentive to the needs of our group and coordinated with our schedule. Having a personal guide who shared not just knowledge but a love and passion for his home left us with our own special bond to Kolkata.

We have been on city tours all over the world, and the two days we spent with KC (Kaushik Chatterjee) are at the top of the list for best tours. KC did two separate days of custom tours for us and both were amazing. KC took the time to understand what type of things we wanted to see/do, and in what manner (air conditioned private car vs. public transportation like bus, ferry, tram) we preferred to get around (we did it all). From there he constructed two delightful experiences. KC is very knowledgable about Kolkata and its history, and is able to explain things in a way that is interesting yet easy to understand. KC is professional but still warm and friendly. You will be missing out if you don’t connect with KC and Kolkata Story Tours on your next trip to Kolkata.
