Birla Planetarium is the oldest and largest planetarium in Asia. It is popularly called Tara Mandal. There are regular one hour shows on wonders of the universe and on facts about the galaxies held here in three major languages Bengali, Hindi, English. The show is really amazing. Great experience. The Sky Theatre show was just amazing and a different experience all together. The explanation and projection was professional.

The location of this landmark is central of Kolkata with Victoria Memorial and St Pauls' Cathedral at walking distances. Shows are timed and also available in different languages like Bengali, Hindi, English and the 40 min show can be enjoyed along with family with children.
the landmark is well maintained and there is a fountain with lights during the evening, making it a good day out for families.
This place will be part of a landmark area of Kolkata so must visit.

This was my second visit to this place and I again was made to watch the same show named "Cosmic Collisions", this time in English though. This Planetarium is undoubtedly the best one in India and gives a unique experience about the rich heritage of Kolkata. A must visit for everyone

After watching for twenty five minutes this show, you come out with better understanding of the Solar system. A very absorbing show coupled with excellent commentary, you really enjoy those twenty five minutes. If you are in Kolkata please do not miss the opportunity.

It is one of a kind in the Eastern parts of our country and supposedly the second biggest planetarium in the World, situated in the heart of the city.
You can get all its historical details from wiki as has been posted by some reviewer here.
Although it has seen its golden days in the past , the only reason I have given it 4 stars ( very good ) is because my 8 year old nephew accompanying me, said he felt it was awesome.
The building itself is under maintenance from outside, but on the inside their is lack of maintenance glaring at you. The inside walls of the Planetarium itself, where the show is focused it dark, shabby and has signs of water trickling down from the roof. The main machine is very backdated and there is evidence of lack of maintenance to it too.
The seats are not at all reclining and some are outright broken. Children will have a tough time sitting,as the seats are meant for adult sitting. The guards at the gate are very uncouth. The tickets are priced at Rs 40/ each ( even for children ) for a half hour show. We went at 4.30pm after reading online that ,that show is in English. To our dismay, it was in Hindi. The old female voiceover during the show is croaky at times and not very clear.
The show itself comprises a very short period of our Solar System and various constellations and there is no showing of Comets, other intergalactic objects, etc. It gets over very abruptly and you always feel that there was so much more to see.
Inside people talk, take photographs with their mobile phones, babies start screaming and what not.
Overall a very so-so experience. But for the matter of the fact that its really one of its kind , people still throng the place even on weekends

One of its kind in the country, this planetarium is good for science lovers and kids. Show is run in both english and hindi language. It is important to grab the good seats which is on first come first serve basis. Also you can not buy tickets in advance....The biggest drawback of this place..you have to stand in long ques before you make into the planetarium. It is very informative in nature. If you have time plan to visit this place after seeing victoria memorial.

slides are atleast 30yrs old....some are torn and barely visible. theres more of a slide presentation with a old lady professor narrating the same story for many years....rather than making use of the 3d dome and AV system !
