One of the best get-together place for friends getting back together after eons. Due to the covid restrictions, only few places were allowed to be used. Pleas make sure you take your trash with you before you leave. There are food and beverage vendors all around and hence if you plan to destress and just relax with your friends, have the best adda with goppo (catch up stories), food and water. all available under the sky on Maidan Just Relax!

This is actually an area in itself,it is so huge. Acres of greenery, right at the middle of Kolkata city. Most of it is owned by Indian Army, as they are the custodians of Maidan area, but there are numerous clubs and other smaller fields in the area, which in its totality is called Maidan. The place is just opposite to the Victoria Memorial

Maintenance is poor, as this place is usually used by all Political parties in India to hold their rallies. Grass is ill kept and littered at places. There are thousands of small peddlers selling street food like phuchka, bhelpuri and ice creams. You can get a ride on a horse drawn carrier, which runs around the perimeter of the Maidan area

On Sundays and holidays you will find loads of revelers as well as players, having a time of their life playing cricket and football on Maidan

I went there yesterday, being a Sunday, with my kids for a horse ride and some fun. The place peculiarly has remained undeveloped and local Governments have done nothing over the years to beautify the place or even install decent toilets !

Lots of work need to be undertaken to restore Maidan to its old times (I used to frequent Maidan for sporting activities during my college years, early 80's). The greeneries are almost vanishing with all kinds of stores, hawkers, transports, etc.

This is the place for a picnic on a sunny winter's day. I relived my memories when I last stayed at Kolkata for 6 months. Walking or jogging with the tram line next to you used to give me a great relaxation. Though I saw a lot more number of football club structures this time around, a visit to the maidan is a must for people wanting to get a bit of peace in the middle of the city.

We, the Bengalee (bangali) can spend a whole day gossiping with friends (adda) and just ask any one in Kolkata about the experience of meeting of friends coming back to Kolkata after long time and they meet in the afternoon of a Winter in Maidan...the discussion has to start like "mone pore" ("remember! those days!")

While most people wouldnot find the reason for such a rave about a vacant plot of green in the middle of a congested city. But maidan is much more than a patch of green, No it is not a park, its too unkempt for that. It is not the lungs ( a cliche that continues). It is rather a potpourri of Kolkata chaos. One of the first description that fits in is that it is perhaps one of the main recreational area of the city. Where on an late summer evening you can go chasing the wind (though parking has become difficult these days) & enjoy an eclectic mixture that Kolkata can throw at you just by sitting down before the Victoria Memorial. Once the vendors tire out trying to offer you their wares, you can take in the breeze that starts suprising from the city side & not the river behind you
Another popular pasttime in winter is to enjoy the sweet oranges from Darjeeling with your back to the sun & catch a game of cricket enthusiastically by the lads on the grounds.
A monsoon favourite of mine is to catch a tram preferably at the early light of the day where it has rained most of the night before on a tram & ride from Khidderpore, behind the race course, to across the Victoria. This is one of the prettiest sites of the Kolkata skyline unfolding before your very eyes like an intricate Japanese hand fan. Like many things we have tried to mar the beauty by covering the racecourse boundary, but still the city coming to fore is quite stunning. It is sight like these which make it easy to understand why it was known as the second city of the empire.

Huge huge ground, surrounded by historical places and buildings, with some musical fountain at one end, perfect place to relax and spend time. You have ll the clubs near to it like Mohammedan Sporting, Mohun Bagan etc...
With the big straight road around, which can be used a runway for flights in case of military emergencies, which once was a no entry zone for Indians, during british raj, it also gives you nostalgic memories.
Fort william next to it, now as a military base, is another wonder.
You have a war memorial, in it
The great Eden gardens is visible at other end

If you visit Maidan for 1st time, then you must not avoid horse cart ride. Few of this cart is very old, and you could feel that you are at Kolkata of mid 1800s.

We were staying at The Oberoi Grand just across the road so a visit seemed a good thing to do .This area 200 years ago was covered in dense jungle, and is often called "lungs of the city. " It is a unique green covering over 400 hectares (1 being 2471 acres or 10,000 square metres ) along Chowringhee. Larger than New York's Central Park, it's perhaps the largest urban park in the world . In it stands Fort William which was built by the British after their defeat 1756 , on the site of Govindapur , and several clubhouses providing tennis, football , rugby, cricket and even crown green bowls. Thousands of people each day pursue a hundred different interests - from early morning yoga, model plane enthusiasts weekend cricketers , and performers earning their living , to vast political gatherings .At the Southern end of the Maidan is Kolkata Race Course , run by the Royal Calcutta Turf Club. We found this huge expanse relaxing , which enabled us to get away from the hustle and bustle of the frantic city life , a couple of hours will work wonders, you won't see it all , but good for the soul .
