One of the places most people in Kolkata flock to for books and city souvenirs.
While the shop could be more organised, it's overall a good experience and there are always friendly staff everywhere. They have a large section featuring Indian authors. It's also the only bookstore we've visited in the world that gave us free books (classics at that. Nice touch).
The nondescript cafe on the 1st floor is a must, even for just a cup of tea or coffee. The only downside was a small jar kept along one of the walls of the cafe. It was after sitting for a while that we noticed it contained water with a single fish: besides looking lonely, it was big for the jar. Whatever happened to buying fishes in pairs, and giving them enough space? The maitre d responded by saying this particular species didn't get along with others and we left it at that, but we hope the establishment does something about it soon. We'll find out when we go back in a few months.

Well, the location is perfect and I love the old-school bookshop look.
Unfortunately tnere’s no ‘charm’ - the place looks nice but the very limited ‘cafe’ fills the entire store with the smell of stale oil so it’s not very pleasing. One of the most appealing things in a bookstore is the ‘smell of books’, not the smell of food

Obviously, in a book store, there has to be books around..!! but somehow this is very cute book store.
I so enjoyed my time here. I went in at around 6:30 in the evening.. went through the books for quite some time.. scanned the book shelves and purchased few..
there is a tiny cafe in the bookshop, and i sipped masala chai and started reading one of the books. It was all fun..
The ambiance is awesome.. staff is friendly and always helping..
The good thing is..the staff members know a lot about books.. They are not just the staff in a shop..but they seem to be REAL BOOK STORE staff..
the only problem i observed was lack of sitting space.. on the ground floor, if one wants to sit and scan the books, then there is no good place.. you will have to stand and scan/read...So it was little annoying..
rest everything about this place is cool..
This place is one of the reasons of why I love Kolkata..

I happened to be in this place after a few years. It was a real pleasant surprise to find a Tea corner at mezzanine floor of the shop. Reasonably priced coffee, Tea and snacks. Good ambiance and equally good service... Surprised to find, unlike CCD and Barista and other coffee shops, the bottled water is sold at MRP, not like other hotels, where they hike up rates or store only expensive bottled water ... Of course the collection of books at store is vast...

If you need a novel for reading on your travels, a coffee table book about Kolkata or just a magazine, then this bookshop will definitely have it. There is also a nice cafe upstairs.

The book store is ok, not the largest selection, but if your walking past pop on in and see for yourself. But don't eat at the coffee shop upstairs as the staff are rude and arrogant, especially the buff waiter. Maybe he had a thing against foreigners, or maybe found fellow males intimidating, but hands down he was the rudest waiter I have come across in India and I assure you I've met my fair share.

Oxford Bookstore is the most iconic establishment in Park Street, Kolkata for book lovers. It used to be the place where you could get any English publication when getting hold of books from abroad was quite difficult in Kolkata.

Now, when there are many good bookshops scattered all over the city, Oxford has been able to retain its unique identity by remaining the coolest place located in the most sought after street in the City. It now stocks many knick-knacks, memorabilia, Kolkata related travel books along with CDs, DVDs and books written in English and Bengali. You can spend hours browsing the books and if you feel tired or thirsty - there is a tea room upstairs for some light bites. The pastries and Darjeeling tea on offer are of excellent quality and is a real draw for people visiting the store.

The book store is quite popular with writers from India and abroad and there are often sessions of book reading and new book launches. It is a great place to rub shoulders with people passionate about books.

If this was not enough, there is a junior section of the book store couple of shops down the same lane. The junior section caters to the needs of the younger generation and has a fantastic collection of comic books. One drawback I find in the junior store is that the books are not arranged according to age of the reader. Hence, if you are looking for a book for someone aged 5, it could be a real hard task to find a suitable book if you don't have a particular book in mind.

I will never pass by Oxford bookstore without spending some quality time inside. It is a real gem in the Park Street area.
