Kids loved the show very much. There are different shows in different languages of Bengali, Hindi and English. We showed 2 p.m. Hindi show. 30 minute show will be loved by children and adult both. Ideal time to spare there is approximate one hour. Nearby attraction is Victoria Memorial, which is at walking distance of 5-10 minutes, where you can spend 1-2 hours.

It's a must visit tourist attraction spot. After watching this show for ~25 mins, you come out with better understanding of the Solar system. It is an iconic structure whose architecture is based on the famous Buddhist Stupa at Sanchi.

Same old stuff seen some 15 years back. There is no change in the program content, no updating. Some chairs are not functioning properly. One has to stand in a queue after buying the tickets outright on the footpath, 3/4 th of which is occupied by the vendors and the rest 1/4th is used for the queue and Public movement.

Washrooms need urgent maintenance.

Overall, it was a very bad experience at a price of Rs. 120 per head.

The visit M P Birla planetarium was a pleasant one. We targeted the 1.30 show in English and it was about Cosmic Collisions. The show was brilliant though the chairs are not suited for viewing a dome. They are non reclining and strains the neck. The premises is very clean and so was the washroom. A good experience.

M P Birla Planetarium, Kolkata, India is adjacent to St. Paul’s Cathedral Church. The Planetarium It has an iconic structure which looks like Sanchi Stupa (Buddhist complex Raisen District, Madhya Pradesh, India). The Planetarium is itself a landmark. The door was opened on 29th September 1962 and was formally inaugurated on 2nd July 1963 by the then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. It has 570 push back seats in concentric arrangement around the high technology hybrid projector.
I visited with my wife, son and grandson to know the ‘Cosmic collision’. My inquisitive grandson enjoyed most and commented that ‘duration should have been more’.
Tickets can be booked online and shows are in English, Hindi and Bengali.
Surrounding the main hall there are 2 Seminar halls, Library, Exhibition Gallery and Astro Corners Room (visitor can collect educative CDs and books).
Since inception the Planetarium is catering to millions of visitors to suffice the inherent needs to know about the universe.
At present the M. P. Birla Institute of Fundamental Research is engaged in planetarium and scientific activities and has been recognised by the DSIR (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research), Govt. of India) as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO).
The Planetarium has been brought under the aegis of an institute involved in research and academic activities in astronomy and astro physics.
