The largest synagogue in Kolkata with a small photo exhibition on the second floor that provides you with a historical review of the Jewish community in Kolkata.

The synagogue is beautiful. The person in charge of maintaining the place is Muslim, but he is dedicated to his role and is willing to tell you a lot about the history of the place.

This is one of the best synagogues in eastern India. The property is well maintained and is majestic. one needs to obtain a permission from Ms Cohen over mail who is very helping. The interiors are majestic and awe inspiring. It is closed on Saturdays

Not open to visitors, or, as the lady at the locked gate informed us, not open to “locals.” I am visiting from the U.S. and am originally from India. They need to update their website so people don’t make the trek to this far-off and crowded area.

Old Calcuta contains several beautiful 19th century houses of worship, among them its three surviving synagogues. Maghen David was founded by Iraqi traders who set up shop when Kolkata was a major port and the capital of British India. It is beautifully maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, contributions from Israeli and American Jews, and its Muslim caretaker. To find it among a maze of lanes and small shops where bargains are to be found, ask for the “Yahudi Church”. Even though it no longer has a congregation, because it still houses Torah scrolls and services are occasionally held there, it is an active synagogue. Interesting memorial plaques line the entrance stairway. The sanctuary is very beautiful and is best seen from the women’s gallery. In the grounds is the Neveh Shalome synagogue, Kolkata’s oldest. Advice on how to gain permission to enter varies, but we went with a local woman of Jewish descent on a spur of the moment visit and had no difficulties, thanks to the caretaker who obviously takes pride in his work and who should be tipped. Nearby Beth El Synagogue can also be visited. Ask the caretaker
