Overview
Our city has witnessed many more cultures in its past than most others would even in this globalised present. Here we will trace for you the origins and remains of the varied communities that hung their boots and called Calcutta home. Lets check out why Chinese breakfast still rules Tiretta Bazar, where the Parsis are dwindling in numbers with each passing day and how the Armenians gave the city its oldest surviving Christian church while we pass the Anglo-Indians, the Muslims, the Marwaris, the Biharis and many more that made this city a great melting pot of diverse cultures. This is one of our most popular tours and highly recommended to get an idea of the melting pot that Calcutta is.

Ram was one of the best guides I ever experienced (and I have met a few). We had two different tours - Black Town/Bengal culture in the morning and flower market etc in the afternoon. It was the most intense and at the same time leisurely immersion possible in the city and the culture. We would never ever have been able to go these places on our own - let alone understood them. If you visit Kolkata I cannot recommend highly enough for you to give yourself the life long gift of a day exploring the city on foot with Ram!

On our recent trip to Cal. Calcutta Walks and Ramanuj helped us to explore the city we love. Ramanuj was of tremendous help to us and even worked around his schedule to accommodate our request. Though I know Cal to a great degree I was still pleasantly surprised with the new things I learnt. Very impressed

On a self-guided visit, this is a stretch that you may walk past, clicking a few snaps, remembering what you read on Wikipedia and be done with it... some parts, you won't even think of considering as a tourist. But with Ramanuj, it felt like diving head first into the fabric of the community. There weren't just facts, there was storytelling, humour, and lively conversation. Calcutta Walks' hardwork into curating these experiences is evident in that fact that there were so many people along the stretch who knew Ramanuj, as if a friend. Shows that they've taken the effort to know people's stories, not just what's there in history books.

We did two walks during our stay: Dalhousie Square with Ifte and Confluence of Cultures with Ramanuj. We enjoyed the first walk with Ifte so much that we decided to do another the next weekend! Both of the walks were an excellent way to learn about the history of the city in a way that we could never do on our own, and Ramanuj and Ifte were extremely energetic and knowledgeable guides. The walks started early (by our student-schedule standards) but were very much worth it!! We'd highly recommend Calcutta Walks to other visitors!

The walk gave an utterly fascinating insight into Calcutta and the many communities that historically made it their own! The rich, textured, interesting and historically sound narrative provided by Calcutta Walks explorer Ramanuj, while walking through the physical spaces inhabited by different groups, compelled me to think of Calcutta's many connections with other parts of the world- stuff I 'knew' or had heard about but could now see and experience! Such an important walk to understand this heady cultural mix that has made the city what it is! (Very thankful and impressed with the fact that Ramanuj conducted the tour with such dedication and interest despite bad weather and rain on a December morning!) This walk is a must-do for all travellers who want to 'see' Calcutta - thank you Calcutta walks!
