We decided to go for the 'authentic experience' and do the steam train, which is also the most expensive of the two. We were allocated a seat in the first carriage, ie the one directly behind the steam engine - massive mistake! The thick black steam was billowing into our carriage, our lungs, our eyes and completely blocked out the... More

The old train was cute and functional. Views were good but not spectacular as expected. Probably not worth the trouble.

We'll it's good to have a photograph with toy train but taking a tour in it is not worth it. Darjeeling is not atol clean and you will find garbage all over the roads.its better to go to Gangtok

Be sure and make reservations for the steam train. Some really nice photo opportunities. It's short so you don't wind up needing to plan a lot of time.

Heritage Train with enjoyment nice experience to travel from Darjeeling to Ghum and back. It was also a nice experience to visit Himalayan Train Museum. The steam engine is worth watching in action.

The joyride to Ghum on the steam train was pretty fun (you could live out your Thomas the tank engine fantasies), but the February weather rather got the best of us (clouds soon obliterated what would, I assume, have been stunning views). If doing this in winter, make sure you wrap up - the carriage isn't heated. Relative to other... More

This narrow gauge steam Railway Train runs right down the street with the cars and is must inches from businesses and homes. We could actually have reached out the window and taken something from a store counter it ran so close to the charming little stores and homes in this magical area of NE India.
