Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

Been here with friends. It is a Roman Catholic Church believed to built over the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle. A great church with serene and peaceful environment. This is an architecture marvel as well built and maintained in Neo-Gothic style.

It is a nice church. Where St Thomas is buried the beach is behind the church with a lot of tiny fishing village and houses and very dirty. The church compound is very clean and there is a church shop which sells Christian articles. And very unfriendly nun staff in fact when we went inside it was very hot and... More

As you enter the portals of the church one is filled with a feeling of entering a holy place. The huge doors symbolises both the openness and readiness to accept anyone who cares to step in. The mass is beautiful and the participation of all indeed is significant. There is a tomb beneath the church - one of the few... More

A must visit in Chennai if you do visit the city. Beautiful church although the section with the bones of St. Thomas might be a bit disappointing. Nonetheless a lovely place to visit

A must visit for Christians, especially Catholics. One of three churches which were built over the tomb of an Apostle of Jesus (the others are in Santiago de Compostela, Spain and St. Peter's Basilica, Rome). One can attend mass at the underground chapel or main church, or visit the museum. The architecture is quite interesting and it is painted in... More
