Neighborhood: Royapettah
Another busy neighbourhood that is a center of trade and commercial related sctivities is the famous and popular Royapettah. Apart from being known for its many tourist attractions, Royapettah is a favourite shopping and entertainment check in for all budget travelers. Popular for shops selling home fabrics, traditional sweets, furniture and house décor, it can be quite a delight for all those looking at packing in a range of quick shopping on a busy touristy day. For those seeking to take a break from a shopping agenda, visit the magnificent 150-year old Amir Mahal – one of the largest palaces in the city or chill at Amethyst, a nostalgically posh haven that's outrageously popular with expats and well-off Chennaiites for its creative menu and beautiful range of artefacts and jewellery.

- Mudit SharmaNew Delhi, India188 contributionsVisitThyagaraya Nagar, commonly known as T. Nagar, and historically known as East Mambalam, is a very affluent commercial and residential neighbourhood in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The stretch between Duraiswamy Road and T. Nagar Bus Stand has some of the costliest real estates in Chennai. It was constructed between 1923-1925 by the Madras Presidency government of the Raja of Panagal as a part of town planning activities initiated according to the Madras Town Planning Act of 1920. The town was named after P. Thyagaraya Chetty. The streets, parks and localities in the new neighbourhood were named after important officials in the provincial government. T. Nagar is now considered the largest shopping district in India by revenue. It is known for its plethora of saree and jewellery retailers, including Pothys, Nalli Silks and Saravana Stores. The neighbourhood is served by Mambalam railway station of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network. T. Nagar is considered one of the city's major central business districts, the other being Parry's Corner, the centre of the city. Pondy Bazaar serves as a satellite commercial hub for T. Nagar, located around the Thyagaraya Road.Visited January 2023Traveled with familyWritten January 9, 2023

First it feels a little bit like "chaos" albeit not as much as most of New Delhi. From this chaos - filled with people and energy - interesting image of the busy commercial street emerges. - Kirthika J2 contributionsHotel with amazing staff and amazing serviceI travelled to Chennai with my mum to get my wedding outfit. And the service at this hotel is amazing , the staff are soo nice and helpful . We had to stay an extra and they were so helpful to accommodate us. We enjoyed the food there , and also the rooms smells soo nice they have humidifier on each floor. I wouldn’t definitely go there and recommend it to anyone travelling to Chennai for shopping . You can easily catch a tuktuk the staff will help you with that. You can get the tradional South Indian dishes from the hotel. They also have a pool on the upper floor we didn’t get a chance to go there as it was a quick trip but it’s definitely the best hotel and service I have ever received .Visited January 2023Written May 2, 2023

We went to shop few things. which included Tamil Traditional clothes, visited a large store Pothys, Which housed every thing we sought. days later I wanted to backpack and went to neighbouring store called Saravana.
Both the places, were extremely cheap, choice was wide and Staff behaviour was very good.

When we arrived at T Nagar we felt a bit unsafe, but after 2 minutes that feeling was over. The market is obviously in a local area (i.e. not fancy hotels around) and very big. We just walked around and went a bit 'deeper' in the market by going into little side streets. There are very nice shops and the people are extremely friendly, although we did experience a lot of staring and begging from women with children. If you can get over that, then this market is a great experience and you can get some good bargains if you'd like. We did take photos quite a bit and we didn't experience any problems with that.

Without a doubt the T. Nagar market strip is my favorite place in Chennai. Always busy, Always crowded, always colourful to the max, it is the biggest market area in South India. Reputedly, it is one of the highest daily turn-overs of gold and silk in the world - and I'd believe it. But what makes T. Nagar special, especially for visiting foreigners, is how local it is: you can get everything from high end wedding jewelry and rich saris to plastic housewares, cloth, vegetables, books, electronics, you name it. All within a few blocks. Which is good, because on a crowded day and especially during wedding or festival season, it may take you an hour to walk those few blocks.
For the foreign visitor, this is a place to join the flow, people watch and absorb the culture where, while you will be hassled some by the usual hawkers, you are definitely not the target audience of the market. For expats living in Chennai, T. Nagar is the best place to get most everything you need for you place in one zone, somewhere or other.

I guess you get every thing except for parking space in T nagar.
We go there early in the morning about 9-9:15 am and park our car below Pothys. Even if I dont have to buy anything I simply get some inner wear / towel show the bill and you dont have to pay anything for parking.
Next trouble .... where to eat. From pothys travel towards renganathan street .... and the first left there is a tea shop 'Sattur tea stall' you can have tiffen / coffee / tea / vada / variety rice etc. Its always crowded, you'll have to stand on the road and eat thats the only downside. If you have a bit more time go to Saravana Bhavan in Pondy Bazaar / One near WITCO on usman road. Can hire an Auto or walk !! Never ever take your car out of the parking lot till you are ready to get out of T Nagar. If you are not really good at driving get help from the drivers most of the shops have drivers to help in the parking lot.
Restrooms ..... Pothys / Sri kumaran Silks - Get into one of these shops
Want to sit and relax - This is for guys who baby sit when ladies do the shopping. Get into the Silk saree / Jewel section they'll always have some nice Sofa/Chair settle down and relax.

Enjoyed this experience more than I imagined. Everything you need is there within walking distance. The fabrics, the gold, the jewels... you cannot comprehend until you see it.
What is great though is that the prices are extremely reasonable. Some prices are fixed in certain shops which makes life easier. Others are flexible so get haggling.

Hi Vairav, I am sure not much has changed in terms of public facilities in this area, but i have wondered a million times - shops like Nalli, GRT have a long time shopping need - say 2 - 3 hours in a shop , for any body to come from one place to another is at least an hour.., So if somebody has to come to Nalli for shopping - it will take 5 hours to get back home...,
pretty sad ..

Chennai (Madras), India48 contributions
Usually there is discount sales in the month of July & August 2018. In Tamil Nadu, the Tamil month Adi (= Ashada) is considered to be inauspicious and people dont tend to do much shopping. The shopkeepers give heavy discounts to promote sales during this period. The next big sales with heavy discounts are 'end of season' sales, where the shopkeepers tend to dispose old stocks and make new inventries.
