LIke they say, If you aren't looking for it, you'd probably miss it. Deep in the by-lanes of the crowded Bhuleshwar bazaar, this place is a shelter of 300+ cows and many other animals like donkeys, birds, goats etc.
THis facility is more than 100 years old and spreads across a sprawling two acres within the congested market of bhuleshwar.

Its run by a charitable trust & non-profit institution.

The Panjrapole was founded by two businessmen, Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy and Amichand Shah, in 1834, initially to look after stray dogs and pigs. They were helped by another Parsi philanthropist Cowasjee Patel, after whom the area, CP tank, gets its name. “The British had ordered a shoot-at-sight to control the nuisance of stray dogs and pigs on Bombay roads,” says Adi Mogralia, secretary, Bombay Panjrapole. The shelter, currently being run by a Parsi trust, has expanded to include branches in Kalyan, Chembur and Bhiwandi, and one in Bhilad, Gujarat.

This was my first activity in Mumbai to ease myself into the city and quite honestly it was one of my favourite activities in Mumbai! You can feed the cows and pigeons. The cows really made my day as they were so loving and loved being petted and some would even lick you. We were the only visitors at the time and were allowed into a shed that just had calves in it. I was absolutely in my element as they all came over and were wanting cuddled. The cows are well cared for. Such a relaxing activity if you like that kind of thing!

This place is crowded most of the time. Went here to give some fruits. Maintenance can be improved a bit.

I read about Bombay Panjrapole in the Lonely Planet and made sure that it was on my list of to do when in Mumbai. My impression prior to the visit was that Bombay Panjrapole was a shelter for homeless cows and other animals in Mumbai. On the surface Bombay Panjrapole looked well run – all the animals look healthy and well fed. However, on closer inspection I noticed that all the cows here are the one bread and that there seemed to be a disproportionate number of calves. I am sure that Bombay Panjrapole started with good intentions however I feel that it has now become a breading centre for the cows as opposed to finding a place for those on the street. Perhaps they use the funds raised for other projects (it was a couple of Rs to buy food to feed the cows) I do not know, however overall I left the ‘shelter’ feeling saddened that I had witnessed an almost ‘puppy-farm’ like organisation. Also all the staff constantly harrassed us for tips everytime they spoke. If they offer to show you something or let you pat they also want tips, so beware!

I had the darnedest time finding this place. I asked for directions multiple times and found it (though I didn't realize I had). I went back the next day with my taxi driver and saw the temple in the middle of warren paths, but sadly when I went all the cows had been taken out to be tended to at the local temples. Still interesting....

A place we visit on the occasion of birthdays, anniversary etc. by feeding the cows, as per the old tradition started by our elders and now passed on to the youngest kid in the family. Have heard about the blessings on such auspicious occasions by God and ancestors. Hence keeping the tradition going.

If you've got small children, they'll especially love Bombay Panjrapole.

It's also grown to have special religious significance for Hindus, who believe it's auspicious to feed cows.
