This Synagogue has been around since the late 19th century, when a large influx of Jews arrived from the middle east and required a place of worship. The building is well maintained and appears to have been designed in a mix of Neo-Classical and Victorian architecture. The exterior is painted in a baby blue colour resulting in the building colloquially referred as the Blue Synagogue. The blue is interspersed with white and makes the building look very pretty. Sadly, I could not enter because of the extra security because of you know what. The staff insisted on my original passport to enter.

This synagogue has been through a lot and was recently restored. Now, it has come to life with services and a small gift center. It is manned heavily by security and has nice facilities.
Highly Recommend checking it out. They are very kind there!

I went to this synagogue as a part of the heritage walk conducted at the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival and I was really looking forward to visiting this place.Non-Jewish people are not allowed inside the synagogue due to security reasons, this being an exception, and I felt extremely privileged to be a part of this visit.
Superb architecture, very calm and rich in history, the synagogue speaks volumes of a community, though small in number, that has contributed so much to Mumbai. The stained glass, the scriptures, the cast iron structure and the distinct blue colour stand out from the rest of the architecture in the vicinity. Mr Solomon Sophore briefed us about the Jewish culture and way of life.
If you get a chance, dont miss out on this place.
Landmark: Kala Ghoda, in the lane adjacent to Rhythm House.

While Mumbai's Jewish community is shrinking, this synagogue is very much alive. We attended Shabbat services there, and we were welcomed. While the synagogue was founded by the Baghdadi Jewish community, current members are from earlier arrivals, the Bene Israel. The synagogue was renovated and restored by the government as an important landmark to India's active tolerance of religious diversity. No elevator, and stairs to climb. It remains in service to the Jewish community, but non-Jews are welcome to visit during normal visiting hours.

This is gorgeous building with lots of history and the pinpoint of my latest documentary Mumbai Jews that built this building. The Sassoon family Jews from Iraq that settled in the city and built it up from the mills and the docks to the library hospital and gateway of India and many other Sassoon Mumbai/Bombay landmarks.
This synogauge is a must visit when in Mumbai especially I enjoy the Friday evening prayers when this place comes to life with song and dance and delicious Jewish Iraqi Indian food.

Airy and naturally lit synagogue beautifully painted in turquoise. Since admission is free, R100 for photography isn't outrageous.

The Knesset Eliyahoo, also Knesset Eliyahu, is an 1884 Orthodox synagogue located in the financial district of Fort in downtown Mumbai. It was established by Jacob Elias Sassoon, a Baghdadi Jew, son of Eliyahoo Sassoon and grandson of David Sasoon, who belonged to the group of Jews who migrated from Baghdad due to persecution, and settled in Bombay (now known as Mumbai). It is maintained by the Jacob Sassoon Trust. After 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack this place is under tight security. You have to take special permission if you are not Jew. Nice temple.

I lovely place to visit. Very quite and calm. There is also an extra treat for Madonna fans, as there are display boards of images from when the queen of pop visited several years ago. Its heavily gaurded by armed police, and they wanted to see our passport before entry.

Besides the sign stating that it is a synagogue, you would never know that this building is one. It is a lovely blue color which makes it stand out from the buildings around it (and it is my favorite color). The interior is lovely, but the fee to take pictures is a little high. However since there was no entrance fee, I willing paid the money. So go and see it. It is right off the main road, near the University of Mumbai.

This is one of my favourite synagogues in Mumbai city as it has some lovely stained glass windows. It also has beautiful Minton tiles on the floors. It is one of the best located synagogues in Mumbai as it is located in the Fort area of Mumbai opposite the David Sassoon library in the lane next to Rhythm House. They have some nice souvenirs too for sale at the entrance.
