I visited this temple in the holy month of Shravan , month of Lord Shiva, on masik shivratri day on monday evening. I did some research before hand and reached the temple easily with gps tracking. The nearest railway station is grant road west side. You can take a bus upto Walkeshwar bus depot and walk for 5 minutes or take a taxi . The taxi goes straight upto the temple and the Banganga tank. The aarti timings are 7.00 to 7.30 in the morning, 7.00 to 7.30 in the evening and 9.00 to 9.30 in the late evening. The shiva linga of this temple was built by Lord Rama ages back on his destination to Sri Lanka to save his wife Sita from the demon Ravana. The Linga was made of sand and hence the name walkeshwar. Opposite to the temple there is a tank which was formed by the arrow of lord Rama when he could not find water and was feeling thirsty. He took an arrow prayed to Mother Ganga and that is why this tank is known as Banganga- arrow and ganges pond. The source of this water is ganges as believed.People take bath in the tank and also bring water as offerings to Lord Shiva inside the temple. The temple was destroyed by the Portuguese and reconstructed later. It is a divine feeling to visit this ancient temple and pray to Lord Shiva. The Banganga tank has to be seen during the day for ducks, fish. Everyone should visit with their family once. The temple also has Mata Parvati and Ganesha . Nearby the Banganga there are many small ancient temples. It is better to take a priest or poojary if you wish to visit all the small temples nearby . The whole visit will not take more than1 hr for complete sight seeing-all temples and banganga pond. There are few shops for offerings to Lord Shiva where you can buy flowers, belpatra, bel and garland, incense agarbatti etc.If you wish to do pooja for your family you can approach the temple priest poojary inside the main shiva temple.I had a blessed feeling after the visit and would recommend it to all staying in Mumbai and tourists coming to mumbai for sight seeing. This ancient temple has been nicely maintained by the temple trust.

Hard to believe such a place exists amidst the posh surrounding..we went by uber (and a good choice as there is no parking and the lanes r v small)..alighted atop some steps that lead to this quaint place-banganga n walkeshwar..the tank itself is being renovated (ie. the steps) although there is ample water with people (read lcoal kids) frolicking in it..however, the water is not clean (may be they spruce it up for the music festival)..the tank is surrounded by many temples and i would recommend walkeshwar and rameshwar for a visit..both are dedicated to lord shiva although walkeshwar is the swayambhu one..our timing was a bit off as we were there near to 6pm and the priest said the puja is done at around 7pm..on the other hand we had the whole place to ourselves and so had a quiet and peaceful darshan..the temple complex in itself is not very big (for both walkeshwar and rameshwar) and we would have almost missed it as were expecting the usual grand entrance/ archway/ building but the simplicity of the place has its own divinity..also the walk to reach the place gives one a peek into a different aspect of Mumbai with narrow cobblestone roads and local population..for our return, we didnt have to walk much/ climb the steps as the local people guided us to a nearby taxi stand (where i guess one could park their cars)..there are 2-3 jain temples nearby and u could also visit them..we, however, went to the girgaum chowpatty for some sand and running (with my 3 year old who loves both)

Walkeshwar Temple is dedicated to God Shiva and is situated near Malabar Hill. The locals also called it as Banganga Temple. The pilgrims flock to the temple during the full moon and new moon to worship the deity and is a superb time to visit the temple to witness its reverence in full glory.Since the temple is situated close to the tank, it is at times known as Banganga Temple also. The temple is usually visited by a large number of people on a daily basis.
